AMS 5889 / Alloy 617 (UNS N06617) Sheet & Strip — Solid-Solution Nickel-Chromium-Cobalt-Molybdenum Alloy for Extreme High-Temperature Service

AMS 5889 specification covers a corrosion- and heat-resistant nickel alloy (Alloy 617 / UNS N06617) in the form of sheet and strip. This material is provided in Consumable Electrode (CE) as well as Vacuum Induction Melted (VIM) forms and is furnished in the annealed state. Alloy 617 is a solid-solution strengthened Ni-Cr-Co-Mo alloy offering exceptional high-temperature strength, outstanding creep properties, and excellent oxidation resistance. It also provides good resistance to high-temperature carburizing and nitriding environments. This solid solution alloy maintains its mechanical stability and does not deteriorate from corrosion even at temperatures over 982°C (1800°F) .

1. Product Specifications & Physical Data

Alloy 617 sheet and strip are available in annealed condition for forming and fabrication into high-temperature components. The combination of chromium, cobalt, and molybdenum provides exceptional solid-solution strengthening.

  • Available Forms: Sheet, strip; also round bar, flat bar, forging stock, extruded section, pipe, tube, plate, wire, and welding wire .
  • Specifications: AMS 5889 (sheet/strip), AMS 5887 (bar), AMS 5888 (plate), ASTM B168, ASME SB-168, UNS N06617, Werkstoff Nr. 2.4663a .

2. Operating Conditions & Selection Criteria

Alloy 617 sheet and strip are specified when designers require exceptional high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and metallurgical stability for thin-gauge components.

  • Service Temperature Range: Optimized for continuous operation from cryogenic temperatures up to 1093°C (2000°F); maintains mechanical stability even at temperatures over 982°C (1800°F) .
  • Oxidation Resistance: Exceptional resistance to oxidation at high temperatures; forms a protective chromium oxide scale .
  • Carburization Resistance: Good resistance to high-temperature carburizing environments .
  • Nitriding Resistance: Good resistance to high-temperature nitriding environments; however, the alloy has a tendency to form internal aluminum nitrides in highly oxidizing combustion atmospheres .
  • High-Temperature Strength: Outstanding tensile and creep strength at elevated temperatures, superior to many other nickel-base alloys .
  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to corrosive aqueous and industrial environments .
  • Retains Ductility: Maintains ductility and mechanical integrity under prolonged thermal cycling .
  • Fabricability: Formable and weldable using conventional fabrication methods .

3. Fabrication & Material Comparison

  • Annealing: 1177°C (2150°F), followed by water quenching (for thicker sections) or air cooling (for thinner sections); furnished in this condition .
  • Hot Working: 927–1205°C (1700–2200°F); reheat as necessary .
  • Forging: 1010–1205°C (1850–2200°F) .
  • Cold Working: Can be cold worked using standard tooling; hardening is achieved through cold working .
  • Machining: Conventional methods for iron-based alloys; commercial coolants; water-based coolants for high-speed operations (grinding, milling, turning) .
  • Welding: Gas-tungsten arc welding (GTAW/TIG), shielded metal-arc welding (SMAW), gas metal-arc welding (GMAW/MIG), and submerged-arc welding methods are suitable .

Applications

  • Outstanding High-Temperature Strength and Creep Resistance: Combustion cans, transition liners, flame holders, afterburner components
  • Exceptional Oxidation and Carburization Resistance: Radiant tubes, furnace fixtures, heat-treating baskets, retorts
  • Excellent Resistance to Corrosive Aqueous and Industrial Environments: Chemical processing equipment, petrochemical reactors
  • Retains Ductility and Mechanical Integrity under Prolonged Thermal Cycling: Gas turbine components, thermal cycling equipment
  • Formable and Weldable Using Conventional Fabrication Methods: Sheet metal fabrications, complex formed components, welded assemblies
