Lessons in Healthy Giving — How to Give Without Losing Yourself

We often think that giving ourselves entirely to others is a sign of love, friendship, or support. But the truth is that fully dedicating ourselves to someone else without leaving space for ourselves can be draining. In such cases, we may feel exhausted, misunderstood, and ultimately hurt.
Healthy giving begins with an awareness of your boundaries. It’s not about stopping yourself from helping or loving, but about keeping a part of yourself just for you. A space that only you can access — your emotions, needs, and dreams. This is the foundation on which you can build relationships without losing your own identity.
Balance in giving also involves respect for others. Just as we need our own space, the other person may have their own boundaries and needs. A healthy relationship, friendship, or partnership is based on mutual respect for these boundaries — both yours and theirs.

Do not expect that by giving yourself, you will always receive the same in return. True giving is unconditional, yet wise and conscious. If you feel that something is draining you or that you are not ready to fully engage in a situation, you have the right to keep a portion of your energy, feelings, and attention for yourself.
It’s worth learning to give in a way that doesn’t make you lose yourself. Your space, your strength, and your authenticity are just as important as what you offer to others. It is precisely through this balance that giving becomes a source of joy and fulfillment, rather than a cause of exhaustion or losing yourself.
The Art of Giving
Remember, you are not a bottomless well to draw from endlessly. You are a garden, which, in order to bloom for others, must first be nurtured. Every drop of water you give should be balanced by caring for your own roots so they can draw strength from the soil. Don’t be afraid to say “stop” when you feel yourself beginning to wilt, because your “no” to someone is often a “yes” to yourself.
Life has taught us that pouring ourselves out completely is a gesture of great love, yet we often forget that true love for others begins with love for ourselves. Every seed you plant should come from your abundance, not from your lack. Only then will the harvest be plentiful, and you won’t feel empty. Your worth does not depend on how much you give, but on who you are when you are alone.
A sentence for the end:
When giving to others, don’t forget yourself — by respecting your own boundaries, you learn to respect the boundaries of others.
