I Came for the Hot Hockey Players and Stayed for the Emotional Damage

Heated rivalry: an honest, unprofessional review.

I do not wish to spend too much time on the plot, both because I do not want to make spoilers and because, let’s be real, if you wanted to know the plot you would just have looked it up on Wikipedia.

So, very briefly, the serie is taken from a book (which I haven’t read yet, so I cannot provide a comparison) and tells the story of two hockey players falling in love; the players in question are Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander, respectively played by Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams.

Why did I see it?

Honest answer: not for the plot.

I started watching the serie because I saw way too many videos of that, so I was very curious, I had to find out if the hype was legit (spoiler: it was a bit exaggerated, but it was understandable), and because the actors were hot. That’s the truth, I told it.

So, how did it go?

After watching the first two episodes I said to myself: “Ok, this is just two pretty boys kissing each other.” Not offended at all by that thought, I continued to watch it. The third episode, with all due respect to the actors who worked in it, was endless, not because it was not interesting, but because I wanted to see Shane and Ilya, which I did not, so it was a bit of a sufference.

The fourth episode, which was still a sufference (like, really, you hurt me with that), made me think that maybe this show was something more.

The fifth and the sixth episodes showed me a beautiful story of two young boys falling in love, going through emotions, difficulties, doubts and problems, and still believing in each other’s love.

Final judgement: I really liked the show, I see a big space for improvement, I appreciated many things, I would have changed others, but I absolutely loved seeing Shane and Ilya growing together.

Now let’s talk about what’s behind it.

The timeline was a bit confusing, I understand it because telling 10 years in 6 episodes is crazy, but yet I had some difficulties here and there. From my point of view some scenes were cut in a kind of hard way, so they were not really linear, besides from that, I liked it all.

Now we get to the real exciting part (at least from me), the actors.

They both came out of nowhere, yet they both were extremely credible in their roles.

Like I said before, I thought I was going to see two boys with pretty faces kissing, which I did, but I also saw something I did not expect, and I began to think about the work they put into it, and so I realized I was not only watching two pretty beautiful faces, with two pretty beautiful bodies, but also two pretty good actors with two pretty beautiful personalities.

There is work they both put into it, clearly training to look that good, but also learning how to skate, studying the scripts…

And do not let me start on the work to perform such intimate and private scenes, because it is so good to watch them from the sofa, but we often forget there are real people doing it in order for us to see it.

So from this very delicate point of view, they were great. For sure they were lucky to actually like each other, but they were also really brave.

Most importantly they managed to become famous in such a short time, and they were excellent at remaining true (at least I hope, I do not really know them lol).

These are two boys whose dreams came true, but also whose life was completely upset, and we sometimes forget it.

Besides the enormous work they both did, each of them built the character personally: Connor becoming Ilya and Hudson becoming Shane.

One of the challenges Connor had to face was definitely learning Russian and how to do a believable Russian accent: well, he slayed, but the search goes deeper as he had to create this strong from the outside sensible on the outside Russian hockey player,

my opinion: really good job, I could believe Ilya is his lost Russian twin.

Continuing with Hudson, watching some interviews I discovered the most extra and the most confident person I probably ever seen, and boy I loved it. He was able to completely build a different personality for Shane, creating a shy, boring (Ilya’s words not mine), (pervert), rules follower Canadian hockey player, who hides his feelings so deep inside, he does not realize he likes boys. His tenderness and cuteness are more than legit; again, really good job (Ilya could have a really nice butt, but those shiny eyes? Priceless.)

I could longly describe more spicy details, but let’s keep this short enough to be enjoyable.

After a while I understood, the sex is not only there to please us (which it definitely does, I mean, you saw it) but is a way for them to express their true self and emotions and feelings, they build themselves, their relationship through the sex.

Final advice: watch it, enjoy it, watch it for the plot, watch it for the actors, watch it for the sex, watch it for the company, watch it for the meaning you need to find.

Final extra advice especially for Hudson and Connor, but for every one reading this: please never change, don’t let the boring world make you boring, stay extra, stay happy, stay true.
