Here’s the simplest, most effective structure I use (and teach my mentees) to answer this perfectly every single time.
1. Start With Who You Are (Professionally)
Not where you grew up. Not your hobbies.
“I’m a Product Designer with a focus on UI/UX and solving user problems through clean, scalable design.”
2. Highlight What You’ve Worked On
Focus on impact and domains, not job titles.
Example:
“I’ve worked on mobile apps, dashboards, and end-to-end product features, collaborating closely with PMs and engineers.”
This shows breadth + collaboration — huge green flags for hiring managers.
3. Show How You Think
This is where most candidates shine or sink.
Keep it simple:
“My process is research-driven, but I move fast. I prototype early, test often, and iterate based on real data.”
This makes you sound structured, not chaotic.
4. Mention a Strength With Proof
Not generic strengths — real ones.
For example:
“I’m strong at simplifying complex flows. In my last project, I reduced a 7-step onboarding to 3 steps after usability tests.”
That’s a memorable strength.
5. End With Why You’re Excited About This Role
Most candidates skip this — big mistake.
Finish with:
“I’m excited about this role because it aligns with my interest in building user-centric products at scale.”
This ties your story to their company, not just any company.
