The Billionaire Uncle: Why Bloomberg’s HBCU “Gift” Requires a Long Spoon

The ick of NYC's former stop-and-frisk mayor funding HBCU prep schools.

We all have that one uncle.

When you were a kid, he was the one who made the room go quiet with a “joke” that wasn’t funny, or the one who looked at you with a suspicion you couldn’t quite name. As an adult, you’ve done the math. You’ve categorized his behavior for what it was — bias, a need for control, or a fundamental lack of respect for your humanity.

Today, you might see him at the family reunion. You might even accept a gift for the sake of the elders. But when it comes to your own children? You keep him at arm’s length. You don’t let him take them for the weekend, and you certainly don’t let him tell them who they are supposed to be. You remember what he was like when you were small, and you’ve decided that his “help” isn’t worth the price of their spirit.

Enter Michael Bloomberg.

Recently, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $20 million partnership with City Fund to launch K-12 charter schools on or near HBCU campuses. On paper, it looks like a graduation gift for the community: a direct “pipeline” from primary school to the hallowed halls of Black excellence, starting with schools at Stillman College and Tuskegee University.

But for those who remember Bloomberg’s “Stop-and-Frisk” era in New York City, the gift feels more like a Trojan horse. It defines a specific kind of “ick” — the feeling of a man trying to buy a legacy in the very communities he once spent a decade policing with an iron fist.

The “Gift”: A Pipeline on Sacred Ground

The pitch is seductive: take the cultural power of historically Black colleges and universities and extend it downward. These “HBCU Prep” programs promise dual enrollment, mentorship, and a shortcut to the middle class.

But there is a catch. These are public charter schools. By choosing this model, Bloomberg ensures the schools are tied to the state’s rigid data metrics and standardized testing — the same “management-first” philosophy he used to squeeze NYC teachers and students. It is a “public only” model that leaves no room for the autonomy of homeschoolers or the flexibility of independent education. It is education as an assembly line, designed by a man who prefers “output” over individuals.

The Sanctuary vs. The Suspect

HBCUs have always been our sanctuaries. They were built to be the one place where Black intellect could breathe without the weight of the “white gaze” or the thumb of state-sponsored suspicion.

So, we have to ask: Do we really want Michael Bloomberg’s fingerprints on these sacred campuses?

This is the man who once argued that police should “Xerox” the descriptions of male minorities and “throw them against the wall.” This is the man who suggested that an “enormous cohort” of Black and Latino males “don’t know how to behave in the workplace.”

When we invite Uncle Mike to set the curriculum on HBCU grounds, we aren’t just taking his money — we are taking his philosophy. We are allowing the architect of a system that saw our sons as “suspects” to now define the “best path” for our children.

The Counter-Argument: Practical Progress vs. Pure Principle

Of course, if you ask the leaders on the ground, the perspective is more pragmatic. Dr. Michael Lomax, President of the UNCF, is clear: “We cannot change outcomes at HBCUs until we change outcomes in K-12 education.” At Stillman College, President Dr. Yolanda Page sees the magic of ninth graders taking college courses, putting them on a path to a degree earlier than ever.

For these leaders, the “urgent demand” for resources in the South outweighs the “muscle memory” of the North. They argue that if you are poor and Black, you already have the fewest choices — so why turn down a high-quality one just because the donor has a complicated history?

The Geography of Forgetting

There is a strategic brilliance — and a deep cynicism — to where this project is landing. In Harlem or the Bronx, Bloomberg’s name sparks the adrenaline of a generation hunted by his policies. But in the Alabama Black Belt, that memory is faint. To a family in Tuscaloosa, he is just a name on a press release. Is he banking on the fact that in the South, his checkbook is louder than his history?

Speaking of history, as a closet historian, I can tell you that the creation of HBCUs holds the history of taking Black people from slavery to civil rights. That last thing we want in these sacred halls is guidance from someone who thinks they know what is best for us.

The Missing Million: Why Don’t They Trust the Parents?

Perhaps the most telling part of this gift is what it doesn’t fund. As a Black director of a homeschool program, I know that even $100,000 — let alone $1 million — would perform miracles for families who have chosen to step outside the system. It would buy the microscopes, the travel, and the freedom for parents to reclaim their children’s minds.

But Bloomberg isn’t cutting those checks. Funding homeschooling requires the one thing he has never shown our community: Trust.

To fund a charter is to fund a system you can monitor. To fund a parent is to admit that the “managers” aren’t the ones with the answers. This initiative assumes that Black children can only be saved if they are extracted from their homes and placed into a billionaire’s managed “sanctuary.” It’s a gift that says, “I’ll help your children, but only if I can keep an eye on them.”

We remember what Michael Bloomberg’s “eye” looks like. We don’t need a pipeline; we need the resources to build our own wells.
