‘do you love me’
have you ever experienced a kind of gentle love that didn’t raise its voice, didn’t accuse you, and didn’t rush you, but still changed you?
‘do you love me’
have you ever experienced a kind of gentle love that didn’t raise its voice, didn’t accuse you, and didn’t rush you, but still changed you?
.. or maybe ever been loved in a way that didn’t demand an explanation, a defense, or a performance, without being called out?
Peter deny Jesus three times.
but his denial was was an unintentional sin, born out of fear, pressure, and human weakness, not a calculated, willful rebellion
Peter loved Jesus. He had pledged loyalty, even to death. “Even if all fall away, I will not.” (Matthew 26:33) When he denied Jesus, it was not because he stopped loving Him but because love collapsed under terror.
Peter seen the risen Jesus. The resurrection is real to him. Forgiveness exists. But Peter denied Jesus publicly. Three times.
Peter goes back to fishing. 🎣 Fishing was his old life. When people feel ashamed, uncertain, or quietly disqualified, they often retreat to what they were before the calling. Jesus meets him there not with an interrogation but in the ordinary place where Peter feels safest.
Grace goes where shame hides.
After breakfast, Jesus turns to Peter and asks: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” 💬😢 Peter answers, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Then Jesus asks again. And then a third time.
Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus restores Peter three times. Not by scolding/ by replaying the failure. But by mirroring it with love. 😭
Jesus never asks, “Why did you betray me?”
He asks, “Do you love me?” 🥹 whether love still remains. Failure did not disqualify him. Refusal would have.
God distinguishes weakness from rebellion. Repentance opens the door to restoration. Shame is not how God relates to failure. Love, not performance, is the core issue. Calling is not erased by collapse.
Peter failed loudly. Jesus restored him personally.
Each time Peter says yes, Jesus gives him responsibility. Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep. Peter is recommissioned. Peter isnt starting over as a lesser disciple. He is continuing as a restored one.
