Why Do Korean Men Have to Serve in the Military?

When people talk about Korea, there is one topic that foreigners often find interesting.

Why do Korean men have to serve in the military?

If you’ve watched Korean movies or dramas, you’ve probably seen men wearing military uniforms. You may also notice that Korean men of a certain age naturally start talking about their military experiences.

So you might wonder:

“Does every Korean man have to join the military?”

For the most part, yes.

But Korean military service is a little more complicated than simply saying, “All men have to join the army.”

That’s why I want to explain it from the beginning, one step at a time.

This is where our story about the Korean military begins.

Why Does South Korea Have Mandatory Military Service?

To understand Korea’s military system, you first need to understand the situation South Korea has been living with for decades.

South Korea and North Korea are technically still at war.

The Korean War ended with an armistice in 1953 that stopped the fighting, but there was no formal peace treaty.

Since then, South Korea has remained in a situation of military tension with North Korea.

Because of this, South Korea requires eligible men to fulfill their military service obligations.

In simple terms, the system exists to maintain the military forces needed to defend the country.

Does That Mean Every Korean Man Becomes a Soldier?

This is where things get a little more complicated.

South Korea’s military service system is not simply a system where every man serves in exactly the same way for exactly the same amount of time.

Military classification can vary depending on physical examinations and other conditions, and there are also forms of service that do not involve serving as an active-duty soldier.

That’s why when Korean men start talking about the military, you might hear questions like:

“Where did you serve?”

It’s not necessarily about where they went to school.

They might start talking about which unit they were in, what kind of job they had, or where they were stationed.

For many Korean men, military service becomes a fairly memorable part of their lives.

So What Do You Actually Do in the Military?

This is probably one of the first things foreigners want to know.

Obviously, Korean soldiers receive military training and carry out the duties assigned to them.

But military life isn’t like a movie where you’re carrying a rifle and fighting every single day.

There is training, but there are also guard duties, equipment maintenance, cleaning, work details, meals, and plenty of ordinary routines.

Soldiers also live together and spend a lot of time around the same people.

So if you ask a Korean man about his military experience, you might hear something like:

“We had this one senior in our unit who was seriously weird…”

And suddenly you’re listening to a story about someone’s personality rather than military equipment.

There is a reason military stories can make Korean men suddenly become very serious.

So What Does the Military Mean to Korean Men?

It depends entirely on the person.

For some, it is a difficult memory.

For others, it was a time they spent with close friends.

And for some people, it is simply a place they never want to see again.

But for many Korean men, military service is a major event in their lives.

They spend a significant period of their early twenties in the military.

That’s one reason military stories can naturally come up when Korean men first become friends.

They may ask where each other served, compare experiences, or discover that they have something in common.

Of course, serving in different units doesn’t suddenly make two strangers brothers.

But having that shared experience can definitely make it easier to start a conversation.

There’s Still a Lot More to Learn About the Korean Military

This is only the beginning.

Now that we’ve covered why South Korea has mandatory military service, the next question is probably what military life actually looks like.

What happens when you first enter basic training?

What does a typical day look like?

How does the rank system work?

What do soldiers eat?

Can they use their phones?

There are plenty of stories to get into.

And if you really want to understand the Korean military experience, there is one place we have to start.

Basic training.

That’s probably where you’ll start to understand why the words “I’m going to the military” can mean something a little different to Korean men than they might to someone from another country.
