The best parks to get lost in when traveling in Albania
In Albania, a walk in the park may be more than a walk. Albania includes the seacoast, mountains, and plains. You can find a park in any of these locations.
These parks aim to keep the country’s spectacular landscape available for all visitors. There are 15 national parks, 23 nature reserves, and multiple archaeological sites. Some of these offer the most breathtaking views found in Europe. You can walk, but many of these parks are ideal for hikers who like to ascend and descend the mountains.

In particular, the Theth-Valbona Valley is the most popular park for hikers. These parks were recently joined as the Alps of Albania National Park. They are located in the Accursed Mountains. These mountains are part of a larger range. They extend from Northern Albania to Southern Kosovo and Northeastern Montenegro.
Folklore says Accursed refers to the devil who escaped from Hell and created the jagged peaks. Another tale is that a woman crossing these mountains with her children couldn’t find any water. As the most popular park in the country, it has seen hikers overcome the accursed nature of this terrain. In particular, the Theth-Valbona Valley is the most popular park for hikers. These parks were recently joined as the Alps of Albania National Park.

The largest of the parks is the Fir of Hotova-Dangell National Park. It is located near the ancient city of Gjirokastër, about 34 miles north of Sarandë. Visitors to this park experience the many caves and thermal springs.
The Hotova Fir is one of the country’s most important Mediterranean plant relics. The park consists of valleys, canyons, gorges, rivers, and dense forests. Snow covers the forest in the winter and offers an escape from Albania’s heat in the summer.
Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park

The Karaburun-Sazan Marine Park is located in Southern Albania. This park has almost everything you could find in a park. It sits on a peninsula and includes an island in the Ionian Sea. It has beaches, mountains, caves, and depressions. If you take the time to look, you will find ancient inscriptions and even the ruins of sunken ships. This park is a must-visit.
Tomorr Mountain National Park

Also in Southern Albania is the Tomorr Mountain National Park. Tomorr is a chain of mountains including the highest peak in Central Albania. The peak is considered a place of pilgrimage and is the most sacred place visited in Albania.
In Albanian mythology, Baba Tomor is the father of all gods and humans. This park is an example of leaving the terrain to nature. Bears, wolves, and endangered species live here unmolested. Mythology aside, in today’s world, you will find caves, waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and beautiful views.
Llogara National Park

Another high-altitude park is the Llogara National Park. Llogara Pass is the high point of travel between Vlorë and Sarandë. I experienced this Pass in my original bus travel to Sarandë. This is another natural park of high mountains above the Albanian Riviera. Not only is the hiking good, but this park also offers the opportunity to paraglide. Nature lovers will like the off-the-beaten-path, away from the tourists.
Whether you want beaches, mountains, views, or waterfalls, you will find these and other attractions in the parks of Albania.
