“Uh… what’s going on?” I asked, not knowing if I was even allowed to talk to her yet.
Never taking her eyes off my former study-buddy, she whispered, “I don’t think I can tell you just yet…”
Not knowing what to do, I started to wonder if she wanted me to simply leave. However, as I took a step towards the door, she stuck her hand out as if she were instructing me to wait.
After a long and awkward pause, she grabbed me by the wrist and quickly led me towards the back of the coffee shop. “Follow me,” she said, seeming as if she were in a rush, now that the coast was clear.
We ended up in a small room where the supplies were stored. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, peaking out the window to make sure Romeo didn’t come back. “I don’t want to get too deep into this, but I’m a bit suspicious about that guy. I don’t want him to know that we know each other.”
“Who… Romeo?” I asked, staring along, scratching my head. “I’ve known him for a while, and he’s always been a pretty nice guy .”
“Like I said, I don’t really want to get into it right now,” she replied, finally making eye-contact with me again. Then, in probably the most confusing event yet, she asked, “How’s Tina, by the way?”
It was awkward enough talking about my girlfriend in front of Julia. However, what I found most shocking was that she referred to Tina by her actual name. Of course, that was how I knew her. But in all my time with Julia, she hardly ever brought her up, and when she did, she simply referred to her as “your little girlfriend.”
“She’s doing pretty well,” I answered, not really knowing how to respond to that question with such limited time.
Julia nodded her head at me and smiled before asking, “Is everything going well with you two?”
I was a bit shocked that she would suddenly be so intrigued by my relationship. And the way she was smiling, it was almost as if she was rooting for us. However, I could see in her eyes that she wanted the truth. And though this wasn’t the appropriate time to talk about such a matter, I decided to give her a little insight.
“Our relationship is as strong as ever… but she isn’t too happy about me being in grad school for a few more years.”
Now Julia was the one with her eyebrows raised. However, her face quickly returned to normal as she explained, “I think that’s a common response.”
“Huh…? You think so?” I reacted, a bit taken aback.
“I’ve heard others complain about the same thing,” she pointed out before changing the subject in a surprising way. “Speaking of Tina, do you have a picture of her? I just realized that I’ve never seen you with her before.”
I was a bit hesitant, but I eventually pulled out my phone and showed her a picture of Tina and I sitting together on one of our dates. Continuing to puzzle me with her actions, Julia stared at the image, concentrating on something. She then pulled herself away before giving me a smile again.
“That’s a nice picture,” she said, allowing me to put my phone away. “You two look happy together. I’m glad I finally got to see that.”
“I’m surprised you asked to see a picture of us…”
“I probably should have a long time ago,” she said, shrugging her shoulders. “It didn’t feel right before; getting too close. But I can assure you, I’m alright with it now.”
A somber feeling came over me as I smiled at her. “Julia…”
She then reassured me with another comforting smile. “You should get going, but I have a favor to ask before you go.”
“What is it?”
“I know this might sound confusing, but I need you to pretend you don’t know me. Don’t mention me around anyone you know for a while, especially that guy.”
“But, Julia… why?”
“Just trust me on this one,” she said, placing her hands on my shoulders as she stared into my eyes. “I’m doing okay, but I still need a little more time to figure some things out. Until then, please don’t come back to this store. I promise I’ll text you as soon as I’m ready.”
Though I was confused, my heart fully trusted her in that moment. Never before had I felt such a calming presence from her as she stared deep into my eyes and assured me that she would be okay.
I knew I had no choice. As I nodded my head, promising to do what she had asked of me, she pulled me in close and gave me a tight hug. I couldn’t help but smile as my face pressed against her shoulder. I quickly hugged her back before letting go and saying goodbye.
From there, I didn’t know what my future had in store for me. However, I was just happy that fate had brought us back together, even if it was just for a moment. Most importantly, I had placed my trust in the hands of the one person I knew would never let me down…
… Julia.
As the month continued to pass, I still couldn’t come up with an answer for the strange interactions I recently had. Oddest of all was that the strange interactions all happened within the same time frame, but with three different people.
Despite my confusion and eagerness to ask further questions, I kept my word to Julia, and refrained from acting as if anything happened. Most importantly, I avoided her store altogether, and never once brought up the fact that I knew her.
Though it was Julia’s actions that were the most confusing of all, I felt at ease with her interaction, given her promise that she would be okay. And strangely enough, it was Julia that had given me faith in my relationship with Tina, considering she had seemingly granted her blessing by finally asking about her.
By this time, I started to accept the fact that Tina and I would probably get married someday. She had been my girlfriend for several years now. And for the most part, we had gotten along, despite a few hiccups along the way.
Still, even with Julia’s blessing, I couldn’t help but wonder what could have been, if it were not for the circumstances that had been plaguing her life. It was a harsh reality, but she made it clear that we would never be together. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder if it could have ever been written in the stars for us, if only things had been different.
Of course, I had no way of knowing how things would turn out with any of the three at question. However, as fate would have it, I would soon find my answer when our roads finally became entangled right before my eyes.
It was a rather busy Friday for me. I had already seen Tina for the day, and I wasn’t planning on being with her again until Saturday. For me, however, I still had a couple of papers to look over before doing a practice clinical early the next day.
Out of the blue came a text message that startled me. At first, I thought about ignoring it because I didn’t really have time for anything besides work. However, knowing there was a small chance it was her… I decided to check, just in case.
Once again, fate had brought her back into my life. It was Julia, whose name alone made my eyes widen, while my heart started to pound relentlessly. As I read the message, I became frantic to see her.
“Come to the shop I work at immediately!” she texted, as if I would ever ignore a request in her time of need.
I was always going to run when she told me to run. And despite having so much on my to-do list, there wasn’t a single semblance of hesitation in me as I grabbed my keys and went off to go see her.
My mind was in a frenzy the entire way, wondering why she so urgently needed to see me. I suspected that if she had simply fixed whatever was going on in her life, the message wouldn’t have seemed so frantic.
Of course, given our past, my biggest worry was that she was in trouble, and that this was her cry for help. No matter what the reason was, I just wanted to be there for her when she called out to me.
Surprisingly, the complex that her store was attached to was pretty busy that evening, forcing me to park much further than I expected. I ended up at one of the other stores before making my way to her shop.
That’s when I realized… that my world was about to turn upside down…
Before I could even get close to her shop, I noticed two familiar faces walking together down the sidewalk. It was Tina and Romeo… and they were holding hands…
I was left completely frozen, shaking at the knees. As they approached me, I was dying to ask them for an explanation, but I could hardly even stand with how badly my legs were trembling.
Finally, they came to a stop as they were left wide-eyed at the sight in front of them. Tina quickly pulled her hand away from his, and then after a tension-filled pause amongst the three of us, she asked, “Phillip… what are you doing here?!”
Somehow, I found the strength to at least speak to them. I knew I didn’t come off courageous at all — more like a scared little boy — but I managed to ask, “Why… were you… holding hands… with Romeo…”
Though the truth was painfully obvious, things only got worse when my girlfriend started to explain the situation. “Romeo and I have been seeing each other for a while… I’m sorry you had to find out like this.”
“You’re sorry?!” I asked, completely dumbfounded by her nonchalant attitude. “You’re sorry… as in… it was a mistake… or you’re sorry that you’re leaving me for him?!”
As if things couldn’t get more humiliating for me, Romeo, a real man, stepped in and answered for my girlfriend. “Look, Phillip… she never really wanted to be with you in the first place. I’m sorry it had to happen like this, but Tina and I have always had a better connection. That’s why she couldn’t quit seeing me even after I changed my major.”
I looked back and forth between the two, almost hoping that they would just leave me there to drown in my own pool of shame. However, Tina only made things worse by explaining how this was all my fault.
“You didn’t really expect me to stay with you after you selfishly chose to go to medical school, did you?!” she shouted, placing her hands on her hips. “I already supported you in the paths we were taking together. That was so selfish of you to take your own path, and not even consider our future together!”
“Our future together?! What are you talking about?! How was going to medical school not considering our future together?!”
“How long did you expect me to wait for you to get started in your career?!” she asked, now haunting me with those memories of her being so curious about my future salary. “You seriously thought I was just going to wait for you forever?! What if you ended up changing your mind again? That’s not fair to me! I have needs too!”
I wanted to stay on my feet, but I was struggling not to crumble, as my life was crashing before my eyes. After being insecure for years, it turned out our entire relationship was a lie! Romeo was never my friend, and Tina never really wanted to be with me.
“This is my fault?!” I asked, daring to fight back, despite being so pathetic in their eyes. “You’ve been cheating on me, and it’s MY fault?!”
“It doesn’t count as cheating when you forced me to do it,” Tina argued, shifting all the blame to me. “It’s unfortunate that you found out like this, but Romeo has been a better boyfriend to me than you ever were, even before I started seeing him behind your back.”
I wanted to fight back, but there was nothing I could say to change her mind and make her realize how nonsensical her arguments were. Quickly, I went from being appalled by her actions to simply being embarrassed by my own.
In that moment, what I always knew before I gained this false hope was finally confirmed. I was a loser and a failure, and that was all I would ever be.
To make matters worse, I noticed the satisfaction on Romeo’s face as Tina so bluntly pointed out how I could never stack up to him. In my mind, I always knew there was no comparison between us. I had just always given him the benefit of the doubt, and thought he was too good of a friend to actually do something as despicable as stealing a friend’s girlfriend.
I even thought back to the day when he acted as if I was the one that no one could be compared to. But now, with that satisfaction in his eyes, and the fact that I could never bring the same satisfaction to Tina, I was left sulking in self-pity, as my life was now confirmed to be just as pathetic as I always knew it would be.
Then, as the two of them looked down on me with absolutely no remorse, I could sense an overwhelming presence slowly encapsulating us. As if things couldn’t get any worse, when I gazed up, I realized it was Julia, along with her undeniable aura, approaching me in my most vulnerable moment.
As she came near, with a confused look on her face, I couldn’t bear to look at her. A part of me felt as if I had let her down, for allowing things to turn out this way. However, the more insecure part of me was brought back to our earlier days, when she would bully me for being such a pathetic loser. I was now left in shame as she got to witness, firsthand, that she had always been right about me.
All three of us were left in silence once she finally reached us. Of course, I didn’t have the courage to talk to her in such a pathetic state, but it oddly felt like Tina and Romeo were struggling to speak as well.
There, Julia stood, looking so intimidating for some reason, despite being in her work apron. I was sure that only moments ago, when she was behind the counter, she appeared as friendly as could be. But now, in front of me with a question on the tip of her tongue, she had once again stopped the world on its axis with that intimidating look in her eyes.
“Phillip…” she spoke, taking a quick glance at the other two before returning her eyes to me. “What exactly is going on here?”
Nervous about breaking the news to her, that I was an idiot who had no idea his girlfriend had been cheating on him the entire time, I struggled to speak. However, after witnessing her talking to me for the first time, Tina jumped in and asked, “How do you two know each other?!”
Julia glanced at Tina for not even half a second before shrugging her off and refocusing her attention on me. Staring deep into my eyes, she asked once again, “Phillip… what exactly is going on here?”
This was unlike any other time when I had been completely emasculated in front of Julia. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t manage to answer her question. As a matter of fact, I wanted to break down, because I was ashamed of the man that was standing in front of her.
To my surprise, however, she softened her eyes and somehow filled me with that comfort that she had always managed to bring me. Then, making things easier for me, she asked, “Did you just catch your girlfriend on a date with this guy?”
All of a sudden, I wasn’t as nervous anymore as I realized that she was somehow already aware of the situation. After I nodded my head, she expressed, “That’s what I thought.”
Tina suddenly turned her attention towards Romeo, showing how agitated she was. “So Phillip does fucking know the barista girl! Well, isn’t that great?!”
Out of nowhere, I felt a familiar chuckle ringing through my ears. As my eyes popped wide open, I noticed it was Julia giggling like she used to when she would torment me. Only now, it somehow felt like it wasn’t at my expense for once.
“That’s right; Phillip knows me,” she explained, slowly folding her apron after removing it from her body. Then, with that same sparkle in her eyes I used to know and love, she turned towards Tina and continued, “We actually know each other very, very well…”
“Who in the hell are you?!” Tina shot back, gritting her teeth. “And what the fuck are you implying by saying you know each other very well?!”
“I’m the girl Phillip has been cheating on you with this entire time,” Julia said as she pulled her hair tie out, letting her long dark locks flow freely with the wind. Then, with one final chuckle, she made a declaration, showing the world that she had finally made her triumphant return.
“The chains that once held me hostage no longer exist. I am now free to do as I please. And all I want right now… all that I’ve ever wanted… is to be with my one true love…
… Phillip.”
