OpenAI founder Altman launches his own digital currency called Worldcoin, which will use iris scans to ensure only humans can participate. US entrepreneur Sam Altman, who developed ChatGPT, wants to strictly exclude AI from his new project.

Worldcoin is a new identity and financial network that aims to increase economic opportunity and enable global democratic processes. The network is owned by everyone, and the rollout has begun 7th July 2023. The creators believe that Worldcoin could potentially show a path to AI-funded UBI, and it consists of a privacy-preserving digital identity (World ID) and a digital currency (WLD) that is received simply for being human, where laws allow.

The Worldcoin team has released the first protocol-compatible wallet, the World App, which allows users to reserve their share of WLD. To receive a >>World ID<<, users must visit an Orb, which is a biometric verification device. This lets users prove they are a real and unique person online while remaining completely private. As the global distribution of Orbs is ramping up, users can find the closest one and book time to be verified with World App and at worldcoin.org.

The creators acknowledge that the journey will be challenging, and the outcome is uncertain, but they believe that finding new ways to broadly share the coming technological prosperity is a critical challenge of our time. Worldcoin is an attempt at global scale alignment, and they hope that people will join them in this endeavor. If successful, Worldcoin could drastically change the way we think about finances and identity.
