Why I Tried a Retro PEQ-2A Setup — And Actually Liked It

Most night airsoft setups today focus on the newest, smallest gear. Everything is compact, modern, and optimized.

So I did the opposite.

I mounted a retro-style PEQ-2A IR laser/illuminator on my rifle just to see how it felt during night games. It’s definitely bigger and more old-school looking than most modern units, but that turned out to be part of the fun.

Because the device is more noticeable on the rail, I became more intentional about using it. Instead of constantly switching things on and off, I used short bursts of illumination to read terrain or confirm movement, then went right back to darkness.

It made night play feel less like trying to overpower the dark and more like working with it.

Another thing I didn’t expect: retro gear has a certain charm. Running something like a PEQ-2A setup feels less like chasing the newest trend and more like experimenting with a piece of classic equipment.

It didn’t magically make night games easier.

But it did make them a little more thoughtful — and honestly, a little more fun.
