Not Everything Needs an AI Agent

That’s the part people don’t want to say out loud right now.

Some problems need agents.

Some problems need workflow automation.

Some problems just need better software, better rules, and fewer humans copy-pasting between tools.

Not every task needs a reasoning loop.

Not every workflow needs autonomy.

And not every business process should be handed to an agent with an open-ended budget and vague instructions.

That is how teams end up with bloated runs, broken outputs, and invoices that make no sense.

AI agents are powerful…but they are not magic.

A lot of agent spend comes from using agents where simple deterministic automation would have worked better.

If the task is repeatable, rules-based, and predictable, automate it.

If the task requires judgment, planning, code changes, recovery, or tradeoffs, then maybe an agent makes sense.

But even then, the agent needs controls.

Budgets.

Stop-loss limits.

Scoped context.

Validation.

Rollback.

Audit trails.

Proof that the work was done.

This is the gap MartinLoop is focused on.

Not “agents everywhere.”

Governed autonomy where agents actually make sense.

Because the future is not every workflow becoming an agent.

The future is knowing when to use automation, when to use an agent, and how to keep both under control.

Autonomous engineering is coming.

But autonomy without governance is just expensive chaos.
