Not Every Successful Path Is Your Path

Why the best career advice isn’t always the right career advice !

Are you becoming the best version of yourself — or just a reflection of someone else’s path?

Early in my corporate career, I had a habit I didn’t recognize at the time: I constantly sought validation from mentors before making important career decisions.

One experience changed that.

While updating my resume, I highlighted my strengths in people management, stakeholder engagement, client relationships, and business problem-solving.

A senior mentor reviewed it and advised me to emphasize my technical and coding expertise instead.

It sounded reasonable, so I followed the advice.

The problem wasn’t that I lacked technical skills. I had spent years building them.

The problem was that I was positioning myself for a path that didn’t align with the future I envisioned for myself. Five years down the line, I saw myself leading teams, driving strategy, and creating business impact — not being known primarily for technical specialization.

Soon, every interview became focused on technical depth, while the strengths I wanted to build my career around faded into the background.

The turning point came during a coffee conversation with a colleague whose technical skills I deeply admired.

I was often in awe of how effortlessly she could solve complex technical challenges.

To my surprise, she told me she admired how I spoke up in meetings, connected people, and expressed ideas clearly.

We were both looking at each other’s strengths and wishing we had them.

Then she said something I’ll never forget:

“Everyone has different strengths. Yours is leadership and management. You bring people together, communicate with clarity, build alignment, and help people move forward. Not everyone can do that.”

That simple statement made me reflect on my mentor’s journey.

They had built an incredible career through technical excellence.

Their advice wasn’t wrong.

It wasn’t malicious.

It came from genuine experience.

But it was also shaped by their own path.

They were teaching me how to become more like them, instead of helping me become the best version of myself.

That’s when I learned an important lesson:

Mentors provide maps, not destinations.

Learn from their experience.

Value their guidance.

But don’t forget to ask yourself:

“Does this path align with who I am becoming?”

Success isn’t about becoming a copy of someone else’s story.

It’s about having the courage to write your own.

The most successful path isn’t always the right path.

It’s about following the path that’s right for you.
