Decision-Making: Life is All About What Works for You!

Don’t let others bind you with their traditions. They might disapprove, but they probably won’t help pay your bills.

Several years ago, I came across two young guys who were praising women for being successful Mompreneurs. I wholeheartedly believe in giving credit where credit is due. My husband has passed away, so I can write about this now. He never liked the idea of me publicizing the fact that he was a stay-at-home dad. When we were much, much younger, we made a major decision for finances and family: the two big Fs on everyone’s life report card. We decided that I would go out to work and he would stay home and work from home AND take care of our children.

We had many experiences with daycare and private babysitters. Some were good. Some were not so good. In the end, we decided after doing the math that even though we got tax credits for our childcare expenses … it was actually cheaper for one of us to STAY HOME!!

Many couples THINK they must have 2 incomes to survive. But in some instances, one of you staying at home actually amounts to a form of income that is PRICELESS. Even though we didn’t get a tax credit for childcare expenses, the peace of mind, knowing that your child was being properly cared for, because one of the main parents was the primary caretaker … was worth all of the gold in Fort Knox and all of the tea in China!!

To his credit, my late husband was an awesome stay-at-home/work-from-home dad. But he never liked for me to say that openly to others. He felt as though it was our private decision and our personal business. We weren’t breaking any laws, so nobody else had any right to tell us what to do! Truth be told, he didn’t want to hear anything from my mama and my other family members (the in-laws), mouthing off about us “breaking tradition” (not laws). It’s his house, and he got to run it his way! I was totally cool with that.

He never took to freelance writing or blogging or affiliate marketing as I did. When he worked at home, we did not have a home computer with Internet access. But he did have access to a public library. So he checked out books and learned about investing and real estate. He took what little money we had in a savings account and invested it. He started first with mutual funds and stocks. Then he decided to invest in real estate. Things went well for a while, but then the economic and financial crisis in America happened. We don’t regret our decision, but we did not predict the financial crisis. We survived it, though; our children were raised and can now take care of themselves, and the rest is history.

The point I wanted to make was … becoming a stay-at-home/work-at-home dad was the best decision we ever made for our family.

Did we get a lot of family and so-called friends talking smack to us about our “role reversals”? Oh yeah! WE IGNORED THEM!!

Who knows what’s best for your family better than you?

Sure! You should always listen to good advice and apply it wherever/whenever appropriate.

But don’t ever let anybody — from the outside — try to regulate and control what goes on inside your own home.

So in addition to honoring the mompreneurs, sometimes referred to as SAHMs (Stay at Home Moms), this article is honoring SAHDs (Stay at Home Dads) who were staying at home and working from home long before the coronavirus pandemic.

**

SAHDs are not SAD. Many men have made this decision, and everyone in the family benefited.

💕🫶
