Inner Critic, Not So Much of a “Villain” After All

As I guide myself and others on the journey of inner exploration, I often find myself encountering the inner critic.

From what I have experienced and observed, this inner voice exists in most individual’s minds. It tends to show up in different situations, with its own unique way of expressing itself- sometimes loud and obvious, sometimes subtle and hidden. It clings to certain deeply held values and can either push us forward or hold us back from moving through important stages of inner growth.

When we create enough space for self-awareness, we can step back and observe our inner critic from a proper distance. What is its role in this situation? What attitude is it taking? Instead of immediately rejecting or fighting it, we can try to simply be with it for a while, offering a sense of acceptance and trust. If we listen carefully, not only to its words but also to its actions, including moments of silence or pausing, we may be able to uncover the important message it’s trying to convey.

I also noticed that the inner critic is rarely alone. Surrounding it is a whole group of inner voices-some fuzzy, some clear-each with its own opinions, emotions, and personalities. They all have something to say. But when they don’t agree, the inner critic often speaks loudest and gets our attention. It tends to ally itself with certain voices while shutting down others, sometimes even blocking them from being seen or heard. Other times, it hides completely or directs its criticism at all inner voices, overwhelmed by the chaos of disagreement — a state it finds completely unacceptable and unsafe.

But what if, instead of fighting it off, we approached the inner critic with curiosity, even a sense of welcome? If we did, we might discover that underneath its sharp words and stern attitude, it often plays the role of a protector, holding onto an important script from our lives. Maybe it’s waiting for us — the ones living this story — to take on the role of both observer and listener, to sit down with it and hear the deeper message it’s trying to convey.

If we look at it this way, maybe the inner critic, though sometimes challenging, is not so much of a “villain” after all.

Maybe we can learn to calm it down — to let it know that even in moments of struggle or feeling stuck, we are still whole, still okay. And when that happens, the rest of our inner voices might finally have a chance to come together, speak freely, and figure out as a team what really matters in this moment-and how to move forward, one small step at a time.
