What’s Your Cheap Thrill?

For years, I carried one reputation that spread across my entire family like breaking news: I wake up late. Not just among the people in my house, oh no, my fame had extended branches. Children, teenagers, adults, grandparents, everyone knew me as the girl who wakes up late. Even that distant relative who visits once every leap year was aware. And therefore, apparently, they taunted me. Because what else are relatives meant to do if not remind you of your weaknesses with full enthusiasm? If I took even a few extra seconds to open the door, someone would say in a “playful” voice (that never sounded playful to me), “Were you sleeping"? It could be 3 p.m. and they would still ask the same question. They even delivered little moral lessons to everyone around, like they were hosting conference “Why She Sleeps Too Much.” But lately, I’ve entered my improvement phase. The era where I manage to wake up a bit earlier, not sunrise early, not miracle early. Just slightly earlier than the people who once woke up before me. And that tiny shift has given me my favourite cheap thrill. The first time I found one of those so-called early risers still asleep while I was wide awake, my heart did a victory dance. With the exact same sugary, condescending tone they once used on me, I gently said, “Oh wow, you wake up so early… maybe sleep a little more today.” The satisfaction? Unmatched. Undescribable. Justice in its purest form. This, right here, is my cheap thrill. The tiny, delicious revenge that makes my mornings brighter. What’s yours?
