3 Board Book Reviews: Bizzy Bear Swimming Fun; Smushkins ABC Zoinks; Smushkins Colors

This collection of reviews is more of a hodgepodge of board books. With summer starting, everyone’s hitting the pool where they can or trying to fight the brain drain before school starts. What better way to do so than with the power of reading?

Bizzy Bear Swimming Fun by Benji Davies

Is Bizzy Bear ready to hit the pool? Absolutely! Dressed from head to toe in swimwear, Bizzy Bear proudly shows off while swimming laps and diving down to the bottom of the pool. (The bear is a very good swimmer.) Tiny slider show Bizzy Bear going back and forth and in and out or waiting for the local ice cream stand to open.

The art is just cute; I adore everyone’s swimming outfits and the bright colors. Digital illustrations show a beautiful day by the pool, ideally not during a heat advisory. Bizzy Bear shows an energetic approach to handling a day off.

The Smushkins by Claudia Rueda

I love these series. Each installment shows whimsy, energy, and bright palettes. The books also have a Spanish translation for interested parties.

Baby Lion Nephew adores the two books below. In fact, on video calls, he demands that I read this and Colors first. He loves showing off how well he can act out the sounds. I’ve started reading them to his baby Tiger Sister as well; she’s shown interest despite being younger than a month. In fact, I planned to keep them for her, but they were a big hit with him.

ABC Zoinks

“A is for arf!” starts this book of whimsical onomatopoeia. Different sounds designate letters of the alphabet, complete with matching illustrations. From verbal reactions to sticky bubblegum to enjoying time in the bathtub, there’s a word for every A, B, and C. They even incorporate the “zoinks!”

This is a great book for kids that love to make sounds. You can also teach them about devices or animals not in their books or vicinity. Baby Lion Nephew doesn’t have a clock that ticks — and I may correct that at a later date — but he got the gist of that.

Colors

The Smushkins grow plants, dig in the snow, and wash windows while identifying the relevant colors. A bright green plant will fill a room, while a grey thunderstorm might chase everyone out of the park.

I adore how all the Smushkin characters get along while showing off their colors. Though if a plant could grow that fast in real life, I think we would have some interesting indoor gardening.
