I recently read the reflections of a young colleague, Abdul Wahid, on how aging often brings a new layer of uncertainty instead of the solid answers we expect. His words instantly transported me back to my youth — to a time when my world was strictly black and white.
Back then, everything had its fixed place:
- Right or wrong.
- Truth or lie.
- Zero doubt, zero nuance.
I believed these rigid stances were my only shield against the challenges of life. A dear friend and long-time colleague, with whom I worked for fifteen years, used to tell me: “Sanja, the world is not just black and white”. At the time, her words only made me angry. I didn’t realize that my “shield” was actually becoming my prison.

When the Foundations Crack
Eventually, life — acting like a skilled geologist — applied intense pressure to my structure. When betrayal occurred in my marriage, everything I had considered a solid foundation began to crack.
In that silence and pain, an alchemy of the soul took place. I began to transform that heavy, absolute black into grey — a space reserved for understanding, humanity, and ultimately, forgiveness. It was in that “grey zone” that my true transformation began.

The Wisdom of the Opal
I came to realize that white is never just white. It is like an opal.
When you turn an opal toward the light, it refracts the entire spectrum of colors. I believe the maturation of the mind is exactly that: the ability to see those colors in everyday life and understand that existence is richer because of the nuances we once rejected as “imperfect”.
Only when I stopped insisting on a black-and-white world did I truly begin to live and enjoy the journey.

A Soul Tempered by Time
Today, I view my life as a mineral that has weathered great erosion. It has become precious precisely because it carries within it every color it encountered along the way.
What color is your soul today? Did it take you a long time to accept the grey shades of life? I would love to hear your story in the comments.
