What NEC Really Feels Like: My Journey at IIT Bombay

There’s a difference between hearing about a competition and actually living it.

Before going to the National Entrepreneurship Challenge (NEC) 2025 at IIT Bombay, I thought I had a fair idea of what it would be like — tasks, presentations, maybe some pressure.

But NEC isn’t just a competition.

It’s an experience that constantly pushes you to think, adapt, and question everything you thought you knew.

The First Feeling: Overwhelmed… But in the Best Way

When I first stepped into the IIT Bombay campus, I didn’t feel nervous.

I felt overwhelmed.

Not in a negative way — but in a way that makes you pause and think, “Wow, I’m actually here.”

The campus, the people, the energy — everything felt bigger than what I was used to.

And at the same time, it was exciting.

For those 3–4 days, it didn’t just feel like we were attending an event.

It felt like we were living a different version of student life — one that challenged us every single moment.

The Reality No One Tells You About NEC

Here’s something most people don’t tell you:

👉 You don’t know what’s coming next.

And that’s the most stressful — and powerful — part of NEC.

We were constantly thinking:

  • What will the next task be?
  • Will we be able to handle it?
  • Are we even prepared for this?

That uncertainty stays with you throughout the competition.

But slowly, you realise something important:

NEC is not testing what you know. It’s testing how you think when you don’t know.

The “We Have No Idea What We’re Doing” Moment 😭

There were moments when we genuinely didn’t know what to do.

New tasks. Strict rules. Limited time. No internet.

And in those moments, stress kicks in.

But that’s where the real learning happens.

Because NEC forces you to:

  • Trust your team
  • Think quickly
  • Make decisions without overthinking

And somehow, in the middle of confusion… things start making sense.

What NEC Actually Tests (Beyond Tasks)

On paper, NEC includes:

  • Case studies
  • Analytical tests
  • Startup research
  • Group discussions

But in reality, it tests much more:

🧠 Thinking under pressure

Not perfect answers — but clear thinking in limited time.

🤝 Team dynamics

You quickly realise success depends on everyone, not just a few.

⚡ Adaptability

You don’t get time to prepare — you learn to adjust instantly.

🎤 Communication

It’s not just about speaking — it’s about listening, understanding, and responding.

What I Learned (That I Didn’t Expect)

Before NEC, I thought entrepreneurship was about:

  • Startups
  • Ideas
  • Business models

But NEC made me realise:

Entrepreneurship is actually about solving problems.

Real problems. With limited resources. In real time.

And that completely changed my perspective.

What I Wish I Knew Before NEC

If I could go back and tell myself one thing, it would be this:

👉 Understand the basics of entrepreneurship.

Not just definitions — but:

  • How startups actually work
  • How problems are identified
  • How solutions are structured

Because NEC doesn’t reward memorization.

It rewards understanding.

My Advice to Future NEC Participants 🌱

If you’re planning to participate, here’s what will actually help:

Build a strong team Because every member matters.

Learn the basics of entrepreneurship This will give you a real advantage.

Stay calm under pressure Stress is part of the process — manage it.

Focus on learning, not just winning Because growth is the real outcome.

More Than Just a Competition

We didn’t just participate in NEC.

We:

  • Faced uncertainty
  • Worked under pressure
  • Learned to trust each other
  • And grew in ways we didn’t expect

We didn’t win the competition.

But we walked away with something bigger:

👉 Confidence, clarity, and a new way of thinking

Final Thought

If you ever get the chance to be part of NEC — take it.

Not because it’s easy.

But because it changes how you see challenges.

And once that changes…

you don’t approach life the same way again.
