The Slow Return to Yourself

Some books feel like reliving the pain of a wound that has already healed. They remind us of lessons we thought we had learned but never truly understood. They make us witness emotions we once avoided because we knew stepping into them would be too painful.

Recently, while reading I Died Too Early by Sumitra Manda, I found myself reflecting on something many of us experience but rarely talk about — the journey back to ourselves after life breaks us apart. The collection explores heartbreak, childhood wounds, womanhood, healing, and the quiet process of rebuilding ourselves. What stayed with me most was not the pain itself but the reminder that healing is rarely dramatic. More often, it happens quietly, through small acts of self-compassion.

We spend so much time offering love, patience, and understanding to others that we often forget to extend the same grace to ourselves. The book’s four sections — The Night I Broke, The Weight of Being Heard, The Truth I Met, and The Slow Returning — mirror a healing journey many of us unknowingly take. From confronting old wounds to accepting difficult truths and finally learning to move forward, each stage feels deeply relatable.

Perhaps healing is not about becoming who we were before the pain. Perhaps it is about becoming someone who has learned from it. Someone who has survived it. Someone who finally understands that they deserve the same love they so freely give away.
