Annihilation Through Creation — And Vice Versa

Number One of... let's see.

I don't yet have a language for everything I am about to say.

Perhaps that is precisely why I need to begin.

This is not a theory. Not a manifesto. Not an attempt to convince.

It is simply a record.

A record of process. Of observation. Of making. Of unmaking. Of being human while attempting to understand what it means to create honestly.

I don't experience my art as something separate from my life.

Nor do I experience life as something that politely waits outside the studio door while I paint.

To me, they are the same landscape.

So this journal is an attempt to walk through that landscape with my eyes open.

My intention is simple.

To observe truthfully.

To record what can genuinely be witnessed.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

There are moments in my painting process where something happens that I cannot honestly claim as invention.

It arrives.

Not through control, but through relationship.

Material meeting material.

Time meeting patience.

Attention meeting chance.

Layer meeting layer.

And somewhere inside that dialogue, something begins to emerge.

Often, I only recognise it after it has already happened.

Sometimes I stand back and become the next observer of my own work.

This journal is my attempt to slow those moments down.

To notice them while they are unfolding.

Or, if I cannot, then to return to them with enough honesty that they may leave a trace worth sharing.

Not as certainty.

Not as authority.

Simply...

...as record.

I have come to believe that expression is not always about being understood.

Sometimes it is about allowing something to exist long enough for understanding to slowly gather around it.

Like mist becoming rain.

Or a constellation appearing because we remained looking upward for just a little longer.

Learning to express the things I cannot yet fully explain has changed me.

It has taught me patience.

It has softened my need to arrive at conclusions.

It has allowed me to become curious instead of certain.

This journal is part of that practice.

There is another feeling I cannot ignore.

A quiet one.

That my most radically honest experiences may not belong entirely to me.

Perhaps I still believe there are others quietly observing the same strange terrain.

Perhaps these writings are nothing more than small signal fires, lit one by one, in the hope that someone standing on another distant hill might answer.

If something I observe helps another person recognise something they have felt but never known how to describe...

...then this has already been worthwhile.

Not because I have taught them anything.

But because we have discovered that neither of us was standing alone.

Conversation begins there.

Humanity begins there.

This journal also exists alongside my paintings.

Not to explain them.

Not to justify them.

But to walk beside them.

The paintings speak in light, material and perception.

These pages speak in words.

They are different languages attempting to describe the same landscape.

The more I paint, the less I believe that a painting is simply an image placed onto a surface.

I think it is a relationship.

Between matter and time.

Between light and movement.

Between attention and the courage to remain with something that refuses to become fixed.

Perhaps these journals are no different.

So...

This is Entry One.

Not a destination.

Not a declaration.

Just the first footprint.

The first observation.

The first honest attempt to leave a trace.
