The 1948 White Sands Proving Grounds Retrieval Incident
Virgil Armstrong, ex-CIA/US Army, spoke several times about an automated landing of a large craft, with all the occupants deceased, within the secure area of White Sands Proving Grounds in 1948. The account appears in one of Leonard Stringfield’s 1980 status reports, and also in Armstrong’s book (a full excerpt of the account is here):
Earlier this year I verified Armstrong was definitely in the US Army. I’ve been trying to find any corroboration of this 1948 landing in the literature. Assuming this incident actually happened as Armstrong described it, very little leaked about it.
Surprisingly, I found some corroboration for this incident in this 1952 (or is it actually 1950?) newspaper article: ‘The radio station said that the three flying saucers had been “found almost intact” on the proving grounds.’ Armstrong said “White Sands Proving Grounds”.
This clipping was found in Frank Scully’s archives at the American Heritage Center. Here’s another mention of this radio broadcast:

More corroboration of strange things happening at White Sands in the late 1940's: In 1950 Silas Newton (who was talking to a group of 8 scientists who were leaking information to him and Scully) spoke of “experiments on the Proving Grounds” in his famous March 8, 1950 University of Denver Lecture. He said the scientists walked up to a “ship on the ground with a door open”. You can listen to him saying this in a recording of this lecture found at the American Heritage Center archives in their Frank Sully collection here.
