What is CSF Leakage? Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is a clinical condition that occurs when the protective fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord leaks outside of normal anatomical boundaries. Cerebrospinal fluid is a vital biological fluid that protects the central nervous system from mechanical trauma, facilitates nutrient transport, and helps remove metabolic waste. A defect or tear in the closed system containing this fluid can cause CSF to leak out through the nose, ear, or spinal region.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage can occur, particularly as a result of head base trauma, surgical procedures, congenital anomalies, or spontaneously developing dural defects. Clinically rare, this condition can lead to serious complications and requires early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

What is Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)?

Cerebral fluid is a clear, colorless fluid produced by the choroid plexus located in the brain ventricles. Approximately 450–600 mL of CSF is produced daily and continuously renewed within the circulatory system. In a healthy individual, the amount of CSF circulating at any given time is approximately 150 mL.
