1926 Johnsburg — Canada Lynx spotted

Lynx spotted a century ago.

“A large Canada Lynx has made its appearance around North River within the past few days,” The North Creek Enterprise reported on Feb. 4, 1926. “Several have claimed to have seen the animal. Some of the trappers have followed its tracks across main road above Henry Bennett’s, where it crossed twice last week.”

• There was still a need for literal horse power at Johnsburg a century ago, even if it was in a backup role.

“One of the Suprenaut’s garnet trucks has been laid up for the winter and three teams have taken the place of the same,” The North Creek Enterprise reported on Jan. 21, 1926.

“Bakers Mills stage made the first run of the season with horses, Monday, Jan. 11,” The Enterprise reported on Jan. 14.

• “Henry Randall, Lester and Elmer Waldron have formed a company called the Knickerbocker Ice. Co. and are filling several ice houses from the Austin Pond. Their contracts are very large for this season,” The North Creek Enterprise reported on Jan. 7.
• “Miss Marjorie Buckman, District Health Nurse, demonstrated bed making to two classes of twenty women members of our local Home Bureau Unit at the home of Mrs. I. V. Toole, Tuesday afternoon,” The Enterprise reported on Jan. 28.
• “The Senior Class will present their home talent play ‘That’s One On Bill’ at Pottersville, Thursday, February 4th.
• “The Singer Sewing Machine Co. is opening a local sales room and repair shop in this place. Rae Galusha is to have charge of this branch which will be located in the basement of the Adirondack Studio,” The Enterprise reported on Feb. 11.
• “It was reported from our ten-week test held the week of the 22nd of Jan. that Alma Harrington, one of the local high school students, earned the highest mark in the Algebra class of seventeen students,” The Enterprise reported on Feb. 11. “She is said to have received the highest marks in all class tests. It seems to us that as Algebra is a real difficult subject, she should receive a word of honor.”
• “Bert Robbins has a new five-tube radio set,” the Sodom correspondent reported on Feb. 11.
• “Jeff Montena is drawing pulp wood for Joseph Strack to North Creek. Frank Hitchcock is drawing logs to North Creek,” the Sodom correspondent reported on Feb. 11. “Edward Wells is driving team for Edward Kathan. He is drawing pulp wood for Joseph Strack. Arthur Hitchcock is drawing pulp to North Creek.”
