Singapore public equity markets need to be shocked back to life.
It’s encouraging that finally Singapore authorities and related organisations (MAS, SGX, Temasek, GIC, and others) are starting to act to bring back the public equity markets to life.
Active investors on both long and short sides have a crucial role to play in this. They can publish research opinions, enhance market efficiency, stimulate trading volumes/liquidity, encouraging transparency by company managements, support price discovery, and finally encourage more IPO listing on SGX.
For instance, similar global agriculture conglomerates have divergent fortunes: Olam Group on SGX trades at P/B ratio of about 0.6, while Bunge listed on NYSE trades at premium of approximately 1.4 ratio. Olam Group CEO Mr. Sunny George Verghese and his team have a formidable task ahead of them to close this gap and reward their stakeholders.
