Tableau Saturday, XXIII, 14th June, 2025

Our sole mission is to help people see and understand data.

  • Tableau©️ 2003

Hi Everyone, I would like to thank those who made it to the Tableau©️ Saturday Colab Kaduna in-person event, especially our host, Sanusi Ismaila and tutor Peter Okwukogwu aka Pablo.

We took a journey through Tableau Public, Python and Generative AI.

We talked about avoiding being too technical in our learning.

In your tech journey and learning, proper and structured reading can not

Learning has a lot of moving parts.

There is something called structural analysis, you can take stuff from one learning space to another.

At a point, you have to be able to report stuff you are doing.

Knowledge converges — ideas that converge come from different sources.

In the learning space, your mindset matters a lot; it determines your end result during learning.

Patience is also a virtue that can't be overlooked during learning.

Dual Axis Charts

How it works in Tableau

• Drop two measures on Rows

• Right-click the second axis → choose “Dual Axis”

• Then you can:

• Synchronise axes (if needed)

• Use different mark types (e.g., bar + line)

  • Format each axis independently

Using a supermarket as a real-life scenario, when comparing how much to how fast in a supermarket, you can have an item sold cheaper to get sales and at the same time, another item has high profit and sales to cover for the deficit of the cheap item.

Real-World Use Cases

1. Sales & Profit

Dimension: Month

Axis 1 (Left): Total Sales (Bar)

Axis 2 (Right): Profit Margin % (Line)

Understand not just how much you’re selling but how efficient/profitable.

2. Website Traffic and Conversion Rate.

Dimension: Day

Axis 1 (Left): Number of Visitors (Line)

Axis 2 (Right): Conversion Rate (%) (Line or Dot)

Using a cosmetics brand's Instagram influencers to promote a sunscreen or makeup products, the way of tracking uptick ( Conversion rates) is through the payment API.

3. Customer Count & Average Revenue Per User (ARPU)

Dimension: Quarter

Axis 1: Number of Customers (Bar)

Axis 2: ARPU (Line)

A growing customer base might dilute ARPU-this chart shows the trade-off.

4. Temperature and Ice cream Sales.

Dimension: Day

Axis 1: Temperature (Line)

Axis 2: Ice Cream Units Sold (Bar)

Demonstrates how weather impacts consumer behaviour.

5. Stock Price & Trading Volume

Dimension: Date

Axis 1 : Closing Stock price ( Line)

Looking at Dual plots, we talked about the shopping culture in Nigeria in comparison to the shopping culture in South Africa, which can only be known when tracked.

Peter reminded everyone of the need for proper communication of data. We looked at the book “ Communicating with data_ The Art of Writing for Data Science by Deborah Nolan and Sara Stoudt

Preface

Communication is critical yet often overlooked in the data-science pipeline. This

book aims to help students and researchers write about their data insights in a way that is both compelling and faithful to the data. We address writing challenges specific to scientific investigations of data, such as how to describe data succinctly, create effective visualizations, write clean code, and accurately summarize statistical findings. We also provide more general advice on science writing, including how to distill findings into a story and organize and revise the story, and how to write clearly, concisely, and precisely.

I am looking forward to the next workshop on Tableau. We will be looking at more examples of Dual axis charts.

Do comment below on how your journey into Tableau has been.
