The Day I Misjudged Someone

(Resentment to an Unbreakable Bond)

By 1980, my career in the Indian Navy felt like a perfectly charted course. I was performing at my absolute peak, both professionally and physically, consistently standing out in my class. Having just passed out from IIT Bombay as a student of the first batch, I felt invincible. But the sea is unpredictable, and so is human nature.

When I was posted to Naval Headquarters, the tide turned abruptly. For reasons I still cannot fully comprehend, a faction of senior officers developed a deep-seated resentment toward me. The environment quickly became suffocating. The hostility was so palpable that I decided to pack my bags, turn my back on the uniform, and run away from India entirely. I was done.

But destiny often hinges on a single conversation. A chance meeting with my lifelong mentor, VADM S. Jain, intercepted my exit strategy. He listened, understood the gravity of my frustration, and immediately took the helm, getting me posted under his course mate, Commodore J.N. Sukul.

This is where my grand misjudgment began.

I walked into Commodore Sukul’s command with my guard completely up, and my mind stubbornly closed. In the naval grapevine, Commodore Sukul was branded with a very specific, alienating label: he was known strictly as the saviour and protector of officers who came through the National Defence Academy (NDA). Coming from a direct-entry engineering and IIT background, I felt I had been thrown from the frying pan into the fire.

I decided I hated him before I even truly knew him. I looked at his every action through the lens of my own bias, expecting to be sidelined, undermined, or ignored in favour of the NDA boys.

I was entirely wrong.

Commodore Sukul was not the biased gatekeeper the rumours had painted him to be. He didn’t care about the origin of a man’s commission; he cared about merit, dedication, and execution. Slowly but surely, the barriers I had erected began to dismantle. We did not rely on wishing for a good dynamic; our relationship was forged entirely through absolute trust and faith. As I put my head down and proved my mettle, he responded with unwavering support and mentorship.

The man I had preemptively despised became one of the greatest pillars of my naval career. The supposed “NDA saviour” took an IIT graduate under his wing, and I eventually became his undisputed blue-eyed boy.

The profound depth of the connection we eventually shared, and the sheer magnitude of my initial misjudgment, hit me fully on the day we were at his home. In a moment of quiet gravity, Commodore Sukul looked at his wife and announced that when his time came, it would be me who would perform his last rites.

It remains one of the greatest honours of my life. Had I allowed my initial prejudices and the toxic whispers of others to dictate my actions, I would have walked away from one of the most defining relationships I have ever known. We often judge people by the labels others stick on them, forgetting that a person’s true calibre can only be measured firsthand.
