Most people think prediabetes only affects people who are overweight. And that belief is exactly why so many cases go unnoticed.

A few months ago, a 34-year-old office worker went for a routine health check. He had a normal body weight, did not eat fast food regularly, and had no obvious symptoms. His blood test still showed prediabetes.

The result surprised him. But it is becoming increasingly common, especially among Indians.

Many people with a normal body weight carry excess fat around internal organs such as the liver and pancreas. This hidden fat, often called visceral fat, can increase insulin resistance and slowly raise blood sugar levels over time.

The problem is that prediabetes rarely causes clear symptoms in the beginning. Small warning signs are easy to ignore. Dark patches on the neck, tiredness after meals, frequent sugar cravings, stubborn belly fat, and skin tags may all be early clues.

Some people also experience less obvious symptoms such as poor sleep, mood changes, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, or slow healing of minor cuts and wounds.

The good news is that prediabetes is often reversible when detected early. Simple lifestyle changes can make a real difference. Regular walking, strength training, reducing sugary drinks, improving sleep, and eating more vegetables can all help improve insulin sensitivity and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The biggest mistake is waiting for symptoms to become severe.

A simple blood test can identify prediabetes years before serious complications develop. For many people, early detection creates a real opportunity to reverse the condition before it becomes diabetes.

Your weight does not tell the whole story. The risks that matter most are often the ones no mirror can show you.
