What the heck is a barbell hack squat?

The barbell hack squat is a quad-dominant movement that flips the traditional squat setup.

Instead of holding the barbell on your back or in the front rack, you place it behind your legs and lift it from the floor, similar to a reverse deadlift.

This old-school bodybuilding move targets the quadriceps while also working your hamstrings, glutes, and core.

Unlike machines that lock you into a fixed path, the barbell hack squat forces your stabilizers to engage.

It’s a free-weight alternative to the hack squat machine.

How to perform it safely and still be effective.

Start with the barbell just behind your heels.

Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and toes slightly out.

Reach down with an overhand or mixed grip, keeping your back straight and chest lifted.

As you stand up, drive through your heels and keep the bar close to your legs. At the top, squeeze your glutes without leaning backward.

During the descent, hinge at the hips and bend the knees while maintaining a neutral spine.

Control the bar back down to the floor. Most lifters use smaller plates or an elevated platform to improve bar path and knee position.

Why you should add the hack squat to your routine.

Barbell hack squats work your quads and hamstrings without loading the spine like a back squat.

They challenge balance, grip, and coordination.

They’re also a great substitute when your gym lacks a hack squat machine or you want variety in your lower-body training.

If your leg day feels stale, this movement brings a fresh twist with serious payoff — especially for quad growth and overall leg symmetry.
