Using Traffic-Light Indicators to Monitor Consolidation Status in Oracle FCC

1. Introduction

In enterprise consolidation applications like Oracle Financial Consolidation and Close Cloud (FCC), part of Oracle Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) Cloud, monitoring the consolidation status of entities is a critical part of the financial close process.

During close cycles, administrators and finance users frequently review entity data to confirm that calculations and consolidations have been completed successfully. However, when reviewing a large number of entities, identifying the consolidation status by reading text values in each cell can be time-consuming and error-prone.

A more efficient approach is to use color-coded indicators — commonly known as traffic lights — directly within FCC data forms. By leveraging Smart List IDs together with conditional formatting or validation rules, teams can visually highlight the status of each entity, making it far easier to identify which entities require attention at a glance.

2. Why Consolidation Status Matters

Consolidation status plays a key role in validating the accuracy and readiness of financial data before it is reported or locked.

Whenever users notice incorrect or unexpected values, the first step in troubleshooting is to check the consolidation status of the entity. If a consolidation has not been run, or if it has been impacted by subsequent data changes, the figures displayed may not reflect the latest calculations — potentially leading to misleading results.

Consolidation status is also critical during post-close activities. Before locking entities through the Approval Units workflow, administrators must ensure that the consolidation status is “OK.” If an entity’s status is not OK, the system may prevent it from being locked — delaying the close process.

3. Understanding the Smart List

To view it, navigate to Create and Manage → Smart Lists, select Calculation Status, click the Edit (pencil) icon, and open the Entries tab.

Each entry in the Smart List is assigned a unique numeric ID. These IDs are the key to implementing conditional formatting — they can be referenced in formatting or validation rules to apply specific color codes within data forms, producing the traffic-light effect.

4. Applying Conditional Formatting Rules

Formatting rules are applied at the data form level, based on the Smart List ID values associated with each entity’s consolidation status. FCC includes a pre-seeded data form called Data Status, which is the recommended starting point for this configuration.

Steps to Configure Traffic-Light Indicators

  1. Navigate to Data → Data Status form. Click the three-dot action menu and select Edit.

  1. Once the form is open in Edit mode, select the Format/Validation Rules tab, then click the + icon on the right side to create a new rule.

  1. Enter a name for the rule (e.g., Traffic Light). Click Add Condition to define each color-coded condition. Multiple conditions can be added — one per status value. Once all conditions are configured, click Save to apply the rule to the form.
