At 27
just my 27-year-old’s dilemma
At 27
At 27, I should be saving for my own future, maybe a house down payment, investments, building wealth. Instead, I’m the family’s financial safety net.
At 27, I should be pursuing my master’s degree. All my friends are finishing theirs or leveraging advanced degrees for better opportunities. I research programs obsessively, local ones, international ones, online ones.
But tuition costs represent money already allocated to my parents’ medical bills, house and car repairs. Taking out loans feels impossible when I’m already contributing to my family’s stability. A full-time program means quitting the job that provides income I use to help them.
At 27, I should be building a serious relationship, thinking about marriage, planning a future with someone I love. My friends are getting engaged, buying houses together. Society expects me to have figured out love by now.
At 27, breaking up with someone you love because you can’t afford to love them properly is uniquely painful. It’s watching the life you want slip away because of the life you have.
At 27, I should be taking career risks, chasing opportunities, building toward bigger goals. Instead, every decision gets filtered through: “But what about my parents?” Three hours away feels like nothing until it becomes the measuring stick for every choice.
I watch friends move across countries for dream jobs while I turn down opportunities that would take me too far from home. I’m geographically tethered by love and responsibility in ways they can’t understand.
At 27, I thought I’d be figuring out who I want to become. Instead, I’m figuring out how to be the person they need me to be while still trying to become the person I want to be.

And some days, I’m not sure there’s enough of me to be both.
