Islands are at the forefront of current global climate challenges. As today’s anthropogenic environmental crisis manifests itself everywhere on a planetary scale, this talk will explore what it means to think with islands in the current geological epoch that has been termed the Anthropocene. After introducing the conversations and developments in various fields that converge around what has been called archipelagic thinking, the talk will turn to island writings from the circum-Caribbean and transpacific regions to illustrate what archipelagic thinking offers us as a relational analytic. Rather than offering a normative understanding of what this turn to islands and archipelagos entails, this talk hopes to illustrate how working with islands and their archipelagic configurations offers us an opportunity to decenter a continent-oriented paradigm of knowledge and move toward a more relational way of thinking and world-making.
