Little Angela arrives at Haverstone homesick and alone, Sylvia and Fiona hatch a daring plan. But what starts as an act of kindness becomes something far more dangerous…
Tuesday, September 6, 1949, Haverstone Academy, Gloucestershire, England
After lights out, Sylvia huddled with Fiona in the corner of the dormitory, moonlight laying pale bars across the worn wooden floorboards. Across the room, Angela’s small form lay curled beneath thin blankets, her pillow dark with tears. She had cried herself to sleep again — the third night running.
Sylvia’s chest tightened. ‘Wouldn’t it be better to move her bed next to mine?’ she whispered. ‘We could keep a closer eye on her.’
Fiona followed her gaze, her expression softening. ‘Aye. It would,’ she murmured. ‘Wee Angela’s sae small… an’ sae far from home.’ Then she sighed. ‘But they’ll never allow it. Each bed’s numbered, mind. Tied tae the Dormitory Register. It’s verra strict.’
‘So we can’t even swap places?’
‘Nae chance. They’d ken straight away.’
Later, staring at the darkened ceiling, Sylvia’s fingers found the silver medallion beneath her nightgown. The familiar shape steadied her; warmth spread slowly through her chest. Her thoughts turned, again and again, to the rules — and to the quiet power she carried, unseen.
What if the register itself could be changed?
The idea took hold. It would mean sneaking into Miss Browning’s study. Altering official records. Using magic in a way she never had before. The risk made her breath catch — but the image of Angela finally sleeping in peace would not let go.
By morning, the decision had settled into certainty.
—
The refectory buzzed with the low murmur of half‑awake girls. Sylvia leaned across the long table, voice barely above a breath.
‘Fiona. I’ve an idea. But I need your help.’
Fiona’s spoon paused mid‑air. ‘Go on.’
‘What if we could change the bed assignments?’ Sylvia said. ‘The register itself.’
Fiona stared at her. ‘Ye mean… make it official?’
‘I think I can,’ Sylvia replied quietly. ‘But we’d need to get into Miss Browning’s study while she’s teaching.’
Fiona let out a silent laugh — half fear, half disbelief — then sobered. ‘For Angela?’
Sylvia nodded once.
‘Aye,’ Fiona said. ‘I’m wi’ ye.’
—
Sunlight streamed through the main corridor that afternoon, bright and indifferent. Fiona kept watch at the entrance to the side passage, heart hammering as footsteps passed too close for comfort.
Down the hall, Sylvia moved as lightly as she could, the polished floor cold beneath her shoes. If only Rusty were here, she thought, steadying herself — and slipped inside the study.
The room smelled faintly of polish and old paper. Everything was precise. Ordered. Her pulse thudded as she found the Dormitory Register and opened it, fingers trembling.
There — the entries. Bed 7. Bed 8. Bed 12.
Angela’s bed needed to be between hers and Fiona’s. It needed to look as though it had always been that way.
Sylvia pressed her fingertip to the ink. It resisted, stubborn and real. She drew a careful breath and let the magic flow — slow, exacting. The number shimmered, blurred, then shifted beneath her touch.
One done.
Her fingers ached as she moved to the second entry. The magic felt thinner now, stretched taut. Sweat gathered at her temple.
Footsteps sounded in the corridor.
Sylvia froze.
The handle turned.
She barely had time to slip behind the heavy curtains before Miss Browning entered, muttering as she shuffled papers across her desk.
‘Now, where did I put that… Ah. Here we are. Can’t keep the Headmistress waiting — not over the House Registry.’
The word registry struck like a bell. Sylvia pressed herself flat against the wall, breath locked in her chest.
The door closed. A key turned.
Silence.
When she emerged, the handle would not budge. Locked.
Her legs gave way, and she slid down the door, the cold seeping through her nightdress. The medallion at her chest felt heavy — drained.
‘I can’t,’ she whispered, panic tightening her throat.
Her hand rose of its own accord.
‘Rusty,’ she breathed. ‘I need you.’
A flicker of warmth answered — faint, but real. Her mother’s voice stirred in memory: In moments of great need, he may lend you strength.
The air shifted.
Warm breath brushed her cheek. Invisible fur pressed against her arm. Sylvia’s heart lurched as her fingers closed around something solid — a second medallion, cool and unmistakable. A steady heartbeat thrummed beneath her palm.
Strength surged through her, different from her own yet achingly familiar.
She reached for the lock.
For a terrible moment, nothing happened.
Then — click.
The door opened just wide enough. Sylvia slipped through, closing it behind her as the warmth faded. She did not stop moving until she reached the main corridor, breath ragged, legs trembling.
—
She found Fiona in the library, where Miss Carruthers was overseeing the return of a stack of books. Fiona caught Sylvia’s eye and gave the smallest nod.
‘If ye don’t mind, Miss,’ Fiona said easily, ‘I promised tae help Sylvia wi’ some studying.’
Miss Carruthers smiled, already half‑turned back to her work. ‘Of course, dear. Do try not to study too late.’
Once they were clear, Fiona caught Sylvia’s hand. ‘That was far too close.’
‘We did it,’ Sylvia replied. ‘It’s changed.’
—
The next morning, raised voices woke her. Housemaids were moving a narrow bed — Angela’s — slotting it neatly between Sylvia’s and Fiona’s.
Miss Browning frowned at her clipboard. ‘According to the register, Miss de la Fuente has always been assigned here. Must’ve been an error at admission.’
Angela stared, eyes wide. Hope flickered.
Fiona winked.
That night, when the lights went out, Angela didn’t cry. A small hand found Sylvia’s in the dark. From the other side, Fiona reached over and smoothed Angela’s hair.
Three beds. One quiet room.
Beneath her nightdress, Sylvia’s medallion warmed — and far beyond the academy walls, she felt it too: Rusty’s distant, contented presence.
For now, Angela was safe.
