On milestones, momentum, and why the next chapter is the most exciting one yet

My last post marked the 800th post I published here on Medium.com.

800!

Even as I type the number, I am actually a bit giddy with awe.

That’s eight hundred times I opened a blank page, found something worth saying, and hit publish. Eight hundred times I showed up: through raising children, settling into different cities, job transitions and a ton of learning and building in public.

Hopefully, you dear reader, perusing this article, understand that I share this not to gloat but to reveal the effort and time that went in before this milestone arrived.

The Journey to the Milestone

Before the joy of 800 posts, there was imposter syndrome and anxiety. Don’t let it get to you.

There were posts that barely anyone read. Keep going.

There were a handful of posts that gained only minuscule traction but bolstered me because it found exactly the right person at exactly the right time. Take encouragement from these and note the styles and topics to deliver more such content.

Posts that I almost didn’t publish and worried over but that now am most glad I did. Every post is a data point.

I posted on my publication, on others’ publications, in newsletters, as standalone articles and as series. Experimentation is key.

The path was not linear but it was instructional!

Lessons & Next Steps

All the posts I published and those still in drafts are practice sessions in public.

  • They taught me the Equal Odds rule in effect and the power of compounding.
  • They are lessons in consistency and persistence.
  • They gave me enough content for a brand new book- The Unstoppable Chapter.
  • They also made me grateful for you.

That’s right — fellow Medium readers and writers who supported me, commenting, highlighting and having dialogues in this little piece of Internet I frequent.

Thank you.

As far as next steps go, I look forward to the logically following milestone- 1000 posts, hopefully by the time the year ends.

800 down, 200 to go!

It’s exciting because the momentum has me spurred and the body of work has me eager to refine and iterate.

How about you? Where are my fellow writers at? Share in the comments.
