EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW

Over the past weeks, we have looked at God making ways in the water and our response to it. We have looked at the case of the Red Sea and Jordan River. We learned something key in Joshua, that sometimes, obedience means stepping forward while the waters are still there. As powerful as that truth is, God does not leave us to ourselves.

God often brings us into close proximity with people. This brings to mind the story of Elijah and Elisha. As they moved from city to city (2 Kings 2), they eventually came to the Jordan River. Elijah took his cloak, struck the water, and the Jordan parted.

We all know the story - Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind. His cloak fell, and Elisha picked it up. He struck the waters again. But more than striking the waters, what Elisha said was profound; he said: “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”

Why did he say that? HE HAS SEEN Elijah DO IT. How was he able to see it? Because God often brings us into close proximity with people we can learn from.

He places people around us whose lives stretch our faith, push us beyond our limits, and help us see further than we can see on our own. They help us dream bigger and walk more confidently in the truth of God’s word.

One of the great advantages believers have is that we are not alone. God places us near people who are shaped by His Spirit and the Word, who can support us and make us walk in the victory God has so richly ordained for us.

THE BELIEVER WAS NOT CALLED TO WALK ALONE - and we must take advantage of that.

The Scriptures tell us to FOLLOW those who through faith and patience inherited the promises - Heb 6:12. Some believers try to do life solo or on their own, they cut off people and want to attain to things by themselves and most times, it always ends in bitter tears and regret.

There are things you will learn by studying the Word and depending on God. There are also things you will ONLY learn by watching those who walk in it - both are needed.

So when something seems impossible or you’re facing a challenge… ask yourself: Who are the examples I am following?

Yes, follow the Word of God. Also recognize that there is a place for training, a place for accountability, and a place for being instructed, not only by the Spirit of God, but also by the people God brings into your life.

So again, the rhetorical question remains: Who are your examples, and are you putting into practice the things you are learning from them?
