GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are Live — Here’s What We Actually Know (and What’s Just a Guess)

Rockstar opened the floodgates on June 25, and the internet quickly split into two camps: those predicting a billion-dollar hour and those refusing to buy it at all because of a missing disc.

Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders went live on June 25, 2026, and the conversation quickly split into two stories: staggering sales projections and a physical-media controversy that’s gotten retailers to actually turn down one of the biggest games ever made. Here’s what’s confirmed, what’s still just analyst forecasting, and what’s genuinely contentious.

What’s Actually Confirmed

Pre-orders opened June 25 across the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, and select online and physical retailers, including Amazon and GameStop. The game launches November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — no PC version at launch, and no current-gen support for PS4 or Xbox One.

Pricing: the Standard Edition runs $79.99 ($69.99 in the UK), while an Ultimate Edition with extra cosmetics, vehicles, and additional in-game content runs $99.99. Both editions include pre-order bonuses if purchased before November 20. Physical copies become available for purchase starting November 12, a week ahead of the digital launch.

That’s the extent of what Rockstar and Take-Two have officially confirmed about the rollout itself. Notably absent: any actual sales or pre-order figures. Neither company has released a number, and there’s no indication one is coming before a future earnings call, if at all. Despite that, there has been real reporting on it.

The Billion-Dollar Hour: Forecast, Not Fact

The headline figure circulating right now — that GTA 6 could generate over $1 billion in pre-order revenue within its first hour — comes entirely from outside analysis, not from Rockstar or Take-Two.

Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson made the comparison explicit on a recent podcast, arguing that GTA 5 took three days to hit $1 billion and that GTA 6 could match that in a single hour. Separately, forecasting firm DFC Intelligence has projected 40 million copies sold in the first year and $3.2 billion in total revenue, while investment bank Piper Sandler has put first-day sales as high as 46 million copies.

These numbers aren’t baseless — GTA 5 has sold approximately 230 million copies over its lifetime, and the franchise as a whole has surpassed 470 million units according to Take-Two’s own fiscal reporting, so there’s real historical precedent behind the optimism. But it’s important to be precise about what these figures are: projections built on past performance and sales modeling, not anything Rockstar, Take-Two, or a retailer has actually reported. Treat the “billion dollars in an hour” framing as an educated guess, however well-informed, rather than a confirmed outcome.

One data point that complicates the sell-everything-instantly narrative: as of this week, stock has reportedly been holding steady at major US and UK retailers rather than disappearing immediately, which doesn’t necessarily fit a true 12-million-units-in-an-hour scenario, though pre-order availability and actual demand don’t always move in lockstep.

The Real Controversy: No Disc in the Box

While analysts argue about the size of the number, a more concrete and immediate story has been playing out around the physical edition. On June 24, Rockstar confirmed that boxed copies of GTA 6 won’t include a disc — instead, buyers get a code in a box that unlocks a digital download, with the actual game arriving the same way a digital purchase would.

That decision didn’t sit well with several retailers, who have explicitly said they won’t carry the physical edition as a result. Independent US retailer Loot Box Gaming stated it would not support the release if the code-in-box reporting proved accurate, citing its pledge to game preservation. Video Games Plus, a North American chain with a multi-decade history, went further, pointing to an existing company policy against carrying any console product that contains only a digital download code rather than physical game data — both retailers stressed that the decision wasn’t a judgment on the game itself, but a stance on what they will stock.

The backlash isn’t limited to small retailers. It’s also shown up across social media, with critics pointing to it as part of a wider pattern — alongside the $99.99 Ultimate Edition reportedly locking certain stores, side missions, and content away from base-game buyers — that they see as a string of consumer-unfriendly decisions bundled into one launch. Reaction to the retailer boycotts has been genuinely split: some fans backed the stores for taking a stand on game ownership and preservation, while others maintained the protest amounts to retailers cutting off their own revenue without changing anything about Rockstar’s plans.

There’s a wrinkle that may soften this over time. A leaker cited by Polish outlet PPE.pl claims the disc-less version applies only to GTA 6’s initial production run as an anti-leak measure, with a traditional disc edition potentially following later. Rockstar itself has been vague but not dismissive on this point, reportedly hinting that a more conventional physical release could arrive after launch. None of that is confirmed, and it’s worth treating it with real caution until Rockstar says so directly.

So What’s the Honest Summary?

Pre-orders are real, live, and open across major digital and physical retailers. The launch date, platforms, and pricing are confirmed. Beyond that, almost everything driving headlines right now is either a forecast or a developing consumer dispute — not a number Rockstar or Take-Two has put their name behind.

Given the franchise’s history, the bullish predictions aren’t unreasonable. GTA 5 remains one of the best-selling entertainment products ever made, in any medium, and GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated game in the industry’s history. But “could plausibly happen based on past performance” and “has happened” are different claims, and right now, only the rollout itself is a fact. The actual numbers — however big they turn out to be — won’t be confirmed until Rockstar or Take-Two decides to share them.

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI are open now through the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and select retailers. The game launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with physical copies available starting November 12. No official pre-order or sales figures have been released by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive as of this writing.
