I keep thinking about a coaster.

Not the kind you leave under a coffee mug. A small, smooth, unremarkable square of glass, about 2mm thick, sitting quietly in a lab in Cambridge. Nothing about it looks extraordinary. Nothing about it hints at the fact that it is holding an entire movie inside it. Not on its surface. Inside it.

That is what Microsoft’s Project Silica is. And the moment I understood what it actually does, I had to sit with it for a while. What if ancient crystals have data in them?

Here is the thing most people miss when they hear “glass storage.” They picture something fragile. Something precious. A display case item. But that is the opposite of what this is. Microsoft researchers took one of these glass plates and boiled it, baked it at 500 degrees Celsius, microwaved it, and scoured it with steel wool. The data inside? Not a single bit lost. It just sat there, unbothered, holding its secrets like glass has always held light.

The technology works through something called voxels, three-dimensional units of data encoded into the interior of the glass using femtosecond laser pulses. These are lasers that fire in bursts so fast they can barely be described in human units of time. A single coaster-sized plate can hold 4.8 terabytes of information. That is roughly two million printed books, or five thousand 4K films, written into something you could slip into your jacket pocket.

And here is the part that quietly rearranges how I think about everything.

Not probably. Not theoretically. The researchers published this in Nature in February 2026. The physics behind it points to a storage medium that resists temperature changes, moisture, electromagnetic interference, demagnetization, and essentially everything that erases the world we build. Now think about the fact that the Library of Congress holds over 100 million texts. And imagine what sits unarchived, un-digitized, in basements and government vaults and national archives around the world. One estimate suggests less than ten percent of humanity’s analog records have ever been digitized. The rest sits on organic material, quietly disappearing.

Glass does not disappear like that. It waits.

What I find quietly astonishing about this moment is that the breakthrough in 2026 was not just about durability. The team cracked something more immediate. They showed that data can be encoded onto borosilicate glass, the same material in your kitchen Pyrex, not just expensive pure silica. That single shift changes the economics entirely. It takes something from a rarified laboratory curiosity into something that could actually scale.

They also pushed write speeds to 65.9 megabits per second using split laser beams. Still slower than what enterprise operations need today, but that number was not possible a year ago. The curve is moving fast.

What is sitting underneath all of this, in a way that feels bigger than the technical details, is a shift in what memory means. For as long as humans have existed, we have had to choose what to save. Storage was always scarce, always perishable, always political. The library that burned determined what survived. The format that went obsolete determined what could still be read. Those constraints shaped which stories, which sciences, which cultures we inherited.

A world where glass plates can hold the equivalent of the internet, indefinitely, without power, without maintenance, without migration, is a world where the logic of forgetting starts to unravel.

The researchers themselves called it a potential milestone comparable to oracle bones, medieval parchment, and the modern hard drive. Not an upgrade. A new era of knowledge storage. One of them wrote that one day, a single piece of glass might carry the torch of human culture and knowledge across millennia.

I read that sentence three times. I am still not entirely sure I have absorbed it.

This is not about nostalgia. It is not about backing up your photos. It is about something stranger and quieter. It is about the fact that a civilization which builds this technology is a civilization that starts to believe, concretely and physically, that what it knows is worth keeping. That the future is worth sending a message to. That the story does not have to end when we do.

The glass just sits there. Waiting to be read by someone we will never meet, in a time we cannot imagine, holding everything we thought was worth remembering.

I think that is one of the most hopeful things I have ever encountered.
