port of Joppa

Known today as Jaffa in Tel Aviv, Joppa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. For over four millennia, it has served as a vital gateway between the sea and the land of Israel, where cultures met, goods moved, and ideas crossed boundaries.

Because in Acts tht i learnt today, Joppa was a coastal hub with a strong Gentile presence. It was diverse, active, and exposed to the wider world. Its location as an ancient port city made it a cosmopolitan hub with a diverse population, facilitating the spread of the Gospel beyond Jerusalem and Judea.

according to Acts 9:43 and 10:6, Peter the Apostle stays in Joppa with Simon the tanner, a profession already considered unclean by strict Jewish standards. Even that detail signals something, boundaries are already being stretched. On a rooftop, Peter receives a vision. A sheet filled with all kinds of animals, clean and unclean.

Based on Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, clean animals (fit for food) are land creatures with split hooves that chew cud (cattle, sheep, deer), fish with scales/fins, and specific insects (locusts). Unclean animals (forbidden) include pigs, camels, rabbits, rodents, scavengers/birds of prey, and shellfish (shrimp, crabs), often associated with disease or ritual impurity.

God forbids the Israelites from eating pig, camel, and shellfish, among others, as a way to set them apart as a holy nation in Old testament.

And a command that disrupts everything he has known:

What God has made clean, do not call impure.

In New testament Acts 10, Peter receives a vision of unclean animals, symbolizing that the gospel is now extended to the Gentiles (who were ritually considered “unclean” by Jews), effectively abolishing the strict dietary restrictions.

it is about people.

Immediately after, he is called to meet Cornelius, a Roman centurion, a Gentile. An angel tells Cornelius to find Peter. Simultaneously, God gives Peter a vision to prepare his heart to minister to Gentile visitors. And for the first time, the message clearly crosses that line. Joppa becomes the bridge. From Jewish-only understanding to a message meant for all = marks the official, public opening of the gospel to the Gentile world.

Jonah also stood at Joppa and chose to run from a mission to non-Jews. Now, from the same place, Peter moves toward it. Same location.

Joppa represents boundaries are challenged / assumptions are corrected / the mission expands beyond what was originally expected.
