Wild Horizons: A 3-Day Maasai Mara Adventure with Simon

Jambo from the savannah! I am Simon, a safari guide here at **Saunterland Africa Tours**. There is nothing quite like the thrill of guiding guests into Kenya’s wild heart. I just returned from an unforgettable 3-day safari in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Here is the story of our incredible journey through my eyes.

Day 1: From the City Lights to the Endless Plains

Our adventure kicked off at 7:30 AM at the Ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands. I met my wonderful guests: Olivier, McKenna, and their daughter, Charlene. Over a quick, comprehensive safari briefing, we mapped out our route, discussed what to pack, and set our expectations for the wildlife encounters ahead. With everyone eager and buckled up, we left the city behind.

We traveled via the scenic Mai Mahiu route. As the road wound downward, the landscape opened up dramatically. We pulled over at the Great Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint for a breath of fresh air and photos.

The Great Rift Valley is a breathtaking geological wonder. It stretches thousands of kilometers across Africa. From our vantage point, the trench looked like a massive, green-carpeted floor bounded by steep, ancient cliffs. The sheer scale of the valley left the family speechless.

After capturing the views, we resumed our journey, driving through vibrant local towns and watching the scenery shift into open savannah. We arrived at AA Lodge Maasai Mara right at lunch hour, greeted by warm Kenyan hospitality and a refreshing welcome drink.

Located just ten minutes from the Sekenani Main Gate, it cuts out long transit times. This means my guests spend less time on bumpy access roads and more time watching wildlife.

At 3:00 PM, after a hearty lunch and a brief rest, we hopped into our safari landcruiser and headed straight into the reserve. The Maasai Mara did not disappoint. Right away, the family was fascinated by the staggering density of the wildlife.

Everyone had their own special connection with the Mara’s residents:

• McKenna completely lost her heart to the elegant giraffes gliding gracefully across the horizon, and she was equally charmed by the tiny, monogamous dik-diks hiding in the bushes.
• Olivier was all about the apex predators. We spotted a pride of lions resting under an acacia tree and a solitary cheetah scanning the plains.
• Charlene couldn’t get enough of the elephants. We watched a family herd for nearly half an hour, and her face lit up every time a playful baby elephant tried to mimic its mother.

By the time we checked off three of the iconic “Big Five” (lions, elephants, and buffaloes), the classic golden African sun was setting below the horizon. We returned to the lodge for a delicious dinner and an overnight stay, falling asleep to the distant, soothing sounds of the African night.

Day 2: The Big Five Quest & The Ultimate Hunt

After an early breakfast, we collected our picnic lunch boxes and headed deep into the reserve. Today, our mission was clear: track down the elusive leopard and the rare black rhino to complete the ultimate Big Five list as well as sight as many animals as we could.

The pressure was on, but the Mara is always full of surprises. After about two hours of scanning the terrain, my eyes caught a flicker of movement. There, draped lazily over an acacia tree branch, was a magnificent leopard. We all let out a collective sigh of relief and awe. Spotting a leopard is rare, but seeing one out in the open like that was pure magic.

The excitement did not stop there. At around 11:00 AM, I noticed a pride of lions positioning themselves in the tall grass. Their bodies were tense, and their eyes were locked onto a nearby herd. We watched in absolute silence as the lions launched their attack. Right before our eyes, a buffalo became their prey. Experiencing a firsthand, up-close hunt like that is a raw, heart-pounding reminder of how nature works. The guests were completely mesmerised by the intensity of the moment.

Over lunch hour, I navigated to a beautiful, safe picnic site. I set up the tables so the family could enjoy their meal surrounded by the vast plains.

During lunch, I pulled out a special surprise: Wambugu apples. These are unique, organic apples grown locally here in Kenya. Charlene absolutely loved them! It was the perfect, crisp local treat to top off a thrilling morning.

We resumed our game drive after lunch. At around 2:30 PM, the moment we had all been praying for finally happened. I spotted a magnificent black rhino moving through the bush. We came to a gentle stop and watched it . It was an incredibly cool moment, especially for Charlene, who cheered silently as we officially completed the entire Big Five list!

While Olivier’s quest for big cats was fully quenched with incredible photos of lions, cheetahs, and a leopard, McKenna was having the time of her life as a birder. The Mara’s skies and plains were alive for her. Throughout the day, she happily checked off: Majestic Secretary Birds marching through the grass, Giant Kori Bustards, Jaunty, quick-moving Crowned-Plovers, Massive Ostriches strutting in the distance among others

We returned to AA Lodge later in the evening, exhausted but completely exhilarated. After a fantastic dinner, we gathered around the roaring bonfire. Under a blanket of bright African stars, we laughed, looked through each ones camera shots, and relived every single highlight of the day before retiring to our rooms for a peaceful overnight rest.

Day 3: Cultural Rhythms & The Journey Home

We woke up to our final morning in the Mara and enjoyed a hearty breakfast at AA Lodge. Before taking our leave of this magical region, we checked out and headed to a traditional Maasai village for a rich cultural experience.

The family was warmly welcomed with vibrant, rhythmic songs and the iconic Adumu (the traditional jumping dance). We were invited into their bomas, where the village elders shared fascinating insights into their ancient customs, harmonious relationship with wildlife, and brilliant beadwork. It was a deeply moving and educational morning that gave Olivier, McKenna, and Charlene a profound appreciation for the people who call the Mara home.

Following our cultural immersion, we officially departed for Nairobi. As we wound our way back up from the plains and onto the highway, we pulled in for lunch at the Buffalo Stopover. Over a delicious meal, the family looked back at their photos and kept talking about how incredible the last 48 hours had been.

With lunch wrapped up, we proceeded directly to Nairobi. The traffic was kind to us, and we drove straight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) just in time for the family’s evening flight out.

As we shared our final goodbyes and warm hugs at the departures terminal, I couldn’t help but smile. What a truly great tour we had! From the majestic wildlife to the rich culture, it was an absolute privilege to share this slice of Kenya with such an amazing family.
