What’s your favorite mystery lost in history?

That of Mussolini’s death. The prison police website contains a clear document describing how Mussolini, near Bonzanigo was repeatedly raped and beaten, while his clothes were forcibly torn off. Giorgio Pisanò has collected extensive information on the matter. The beatings he received while naked are obviously, according to the autopsy, different from those received through clothing. The instrument with which he was raped was a broom handle found near Bonzanigo. In fact the severe internal bleeding was a determining factor, as was the shooting. Not only that, but there was abundant seminal fluid in his anal orifice. We don’t know whether he was also directly raped, or whether his orifice was simply covered in seminal fluid. Dying on the ground but alive and conscious he was covered in urine. He was then probably shot in his dying state, it is unknown whether at De Maria’s house or whether he was dragged in that condition to the Giulino gate. With no sympathy whatsoever for fascism, much less for Mussolini, I find this an undignified outrage. Not to mention the treatment of the body.
