Making a Chore Fun — My Story

My mother keeps telling me — For god’s sake Sanam, clean your room, it’s a holy mess! But I always reply with — Mama. It’s not only my room, it’s Yohan’s also as well. So why do I have to do it? But I usually never get a reply for that. To be fair I’m the messmaker when it comes to me and my younger brother. Uniform dumped on the bed, pillows scattered maybe even one lying forlorn on the floor, books everywhere and maybe a packet of chips during one of my intensively long reading sessions with my beloved novels. BUT! I never feel like cleaning up. Whenever I think about it my mind goes — Meh. You could watch anime instead.

I struggled with this till one day I came waltzing into my room, headphones on, vibes only. I started dancing, mostly since no one was there. Five minutes later I looked at my room, headphones dangling by my neck. The room was… tidy! I was dancing to the beat and while moving around I picked the items up and tossed them in their places, out of pure musical bliss. I stood in the same spot for five seconds as my brain processed my sudden show of unintentional responsibility.

Then I realised, whenever I have to tidy my room, it doesn’t have to be a chore — it can be a ballroom. Provided that my mother doesn’t find me and thinks I went crazy. So the next time you’re trying to wriggle your way out of a chore — know that it doesn’t have to be boring if you make it fun.
