Hiding in Earth Tones
When Did Quiet Become Safe?
Hiding in Earth Tones
When Did Quiet Become Safe?

I have started noticing how much of my life has been chosen in earth tones.
The clothes I wear. The cars I’ve owned. The bikes I’ve ridden. The things I reach for when I have options. Black, brown, gray, olive, tan. Subtle colors. Quiet colors. Colors that do not announce themselves before I get the chance to.
At first, I thought it was just taste.
Maybe I like clean design. Maybe I’m drawn to simplicity. Maybe I genuinely prefer the understated beauty of things that don’t have to scream to be beautiful.
And I do.
But there is another layer there too.
There is a voice in the back of my head that always seems to show up when I want something a little brighter, a little softer, a little more visible.
“That’s too flashy.”
“I don’t know if I can pull that off.”
“I don’t want to draw attention to myself.”
I hear it when I look at clothes. I hear it when I look at cars. I hear it now, looking at a mountain bike in this beautiful matte lavender, almost maroon color. Deep, soft, unexpected. The kind of color that makes me pause because I actually want it.
And immediately, the calculation begins.
Would people notice it? Would it make me stand out? Would someone wonder how much it costs? Would it make the bike more likely to be stolen? Would it make me more visible than I want to be?
A black bike feels safer. Unassuming. Boring, almost. It disappears into the category of “bike.” Nobody needs to ask questions. Nobody needs to be curious. Nobody needs to clock it as special.
And maybe that is what I have been trying to do too.
Disappear into the category.
Man. Professional. Partner. Neighbor. Customer. Safe. Normal. Not a problem. Not a target.
There is something sad about realizing how many of my preferences might also be protections.
Not false preferences. Not fake ones. I do love subtle things. I love clean lines. I love quiet beauty. I love colors that feel grounded, natural, and easy to live with.
But I also know what it means to want to hide in plain sight.
I know what it means to not want to be studied too closely. To not want strangers curious about what I have, what I make, where I belong, what I am doing here, whether I am worth bothering, whether I am worth taking from.
I know what it means to move through the world already visible in ways I did not choose, and then spend the rest of my life trying not to become more visible than necessary.
So maybe the question is not whether I like earth tones or whether I am afraid of color.
Maybe the question is this:
When did being understated become the same thing as being safe?
And what would it feel like to choose something beautiful, not because it helps me disappear, but because I am finally allowed to be seen?
