The Beginner’s Brain(Shoshin, a concept from Zen philosophy): How Curiousness Keeps You Young and Genius?
Have you seen how children view the world? They are fascinated by everything, such as butterflies, raindrops, and even basic questions like “why.”
That innocent excitement is not only attractive but also effective. It is what sustains the brain’s creativity, adaptability, and potential. Our minds cease to develop once we lose our curiosity.
Curiosity is a brain function that keeps us mentally young, imaginative, and attentive to life; it’s not just a personality attribute.

1. What Is the Beginner’s Brain?

In Zen philosophy, the term “beginner’s brain” (also known as Shoshin) describes observing things like they are for the first time, free from assumptions and judgment.
This theory is supported by science. Your brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter connected to motivation and happiness, when you are excited. The hippocampus and other learning regions are activated by this dopamine surge, which speeds up and maintains the retention of knowledge.
In simple terms:
Your brain is stimulated by curiosity in a similar way that it is by excitement.
Your mind is instructed, “Remain awake.” Be mindful. This is something new.

Our minds naturally gravitate toward familiarity and comfort as we become older. We enjoy what we are familiar with. The problem is that growth is not possible in a comfortable environment.
Your brain creates new neural connections each time you try something new, such as acquiring a skill, investigating an idea, or raising a question. Neuroplasticity is a process that keeps your brain flexible and youthful.
Those routes deteriorate when curiosity ceases. Like a well-worked muscle, the brain remains flexible as long as curiosity persists.
The mind becomes old due to an aversion to innovation rather than genuine maturity.
To put it simply:
Your brain is stimulated by curiosity in the same way that it is by excitement.
Your mind is told, “Remain awake.” Be mindful. This is something new.

The connection between creativity and knowledge is curiosity. Your brain starts creating new connections between completely different ideas when you wonder how something functions or why something occurs.
Because of this, some of the greatest intellectuals in the world, especially writers, scientists, and artists, have an insatiable curiosity. They are the ones who always ask “What if?” even if they aren’t necessarily the smartest people in the area.
Your brain remains open, creative, and willing to solve issues in ways in ways it never could before.
4. The Emotional Power of Curiosity

Curiosity makes you feel younger. Why? Because it brings back happiness and presence.
When you’re curious, you’re present and completely focused on the present as opposed to obsessing over the past or worrying about the future. Stress has been reduced, and feel-good hormones like endorphins and serotonin are released.
Curiosity, that is not just mental health but also emotional rejuvenation.
5. How to Rekindle Your Beginner's Mind
⁉️ Ask “why” more frequently. Even about basic things like how a flower grows, how a device operates, or the reasons behind people’s actions.
🌱 Every week, try something new. Read about something that you are unfamiliar with, enjoy a meal, or learn a new term. Your brain is programmed more quickly by novelty than by repetition.
☀️ Stop saying “I already know.” Certainty is the largest hindrance to inquiry. You stop learning when you make an assumption.
🤓 Be in the company of smart individuals. People who ask questions motivate you to do the same because curiosity is contagious.
🎈 Concluding remarks
Curiosity is youth for the mind, more than a habit. It keeps your mind active, your inner self alive, and your perspective constantly expanding.
Thus, maintain your curiosity. Ask questions. Investigate what you don’t understand.
Because every time you wonder, your world extends and your brain becomes younger. 🌿🍁
