The Blue Bolt of Balicha
In the scorched red valleys where the Aravalis rise,
Underneath the gold glare of the Rajput skies,
There’s a name that the wind whispers low through the pass,
A name that still ripples the wild mountain grass.
It isn’t a Sultan, a King, or a Lord,
It isn’t a shield, and it isn’t a sword;
But a spirit of thunder, of silver and blue,
The heart of a comrade, courageous and true.
They called him Chetak.
Born of the desert, of sand and of fire,
A Marwari stallion, a warrior’s desire.
With ears curved like bows, aiming straight for the sun,
A soul that was destined to never be won.
His coat was a mystery, a shimmering sight,
A “Neela Ghoda” in the mid-morning light.
With a peacock-like neck and a chest like a drum,
He waited for battles he knew were to come.
He was arrogant, fierce — a “one-master” soul,
With a temper like lightning that none could control.
For only one Lion could mount the blue steed:
The Rana of Mewar, a warrior breed.
The year was a furnace of smoke and of lead,
Where the living were treading the ghosts of the dead.
At Haldighati, where the mountains stood still,
Pratap and his stallion rode down from the hill.
Across the red field, through the Mughal array,
Sat Man Singh on an elephant, blocking the way.
But Chetak didn’t falter, he didn’t turn back,
He launched like a bolt on a suicidal track.
With a feat that defied every law of the earth,
To show what a Rajput’s devotion was worth,
The stallion rose up on the elephant’s head,
While Pratap’s heavy spear through the battle-air sped.
But a hidden steel blade on the elephant’s tusk,
Slashed through the stallion in the gathering dusk.
A leg was torn open, the marrow laid bare,
As the scent of the dying filled the desert air.
On three legs he galloped! On three legs he flew!
As the circle of enemies tighter it drew.
Through the rocky ravines and the jagged debris,
He carried his master, determined and free.
Then came the Nala — the chasm of stone,
Where the strength of a mortal is tested alone.
Twenty-five feet of the yawning abyss,
Where the shadow of death gave a cold, hollow kiss.
With a scream of defiance, with blood on his chest,
The Blue Bolt of Mewar put fate to the test.
He launched from the bank with a desperate cry,
For a moment, a horse was a god in the sky.
He cleared the great water! He landed in stride!
While the Mughal pursuit watched from the far side.
They halted in silence, they lowered their spears,
Witnessing bravery that echoed through years.
The danger had passed, and the forest was deep,
But the heart of the hero was falling asleep.
He lowered his head as his strength drained away,
In the arms of the Rana, at the end of the day.
The King, who had never bowed head to a foe,
Now wept for the brother he had to let go.
At Balicha he rests, in a Samadhi of stone,
The greatest companion that history has known.
No more the battle, no more the fray,
The Blue Ghost of Mewar has faded away.
But go to the hills where the red dust still flies,
And look for the horse with the sun in his eyes.
For a throne can be stolen, and gold can depart,
But Chetak still gallops in India’s heart.,,,, continued…….
