Real estate realities

Maybe some of you have already guessed which country I’m talking about. Or maybe you’re wondering why on earth I haven’t revealed its name yet. Don’t worry, when this story eventually comes to an end, and we say our final goodbyes, I’ll share the location. But for now, it’s just not the right time yet.
After spending three long weeks on the back of a scooter, getting soaked right down to our underwear under sudden tropical rain, we still had absolutely nothing.
To make matters worse, we had completely wasted our precious time because the owner of our "best option"—the plot with the two old villas—had been stringing us along. The main reason for our massive delay was simply how painfully slow he was at sending over the company registration and land documents.
At first, we thought he was just being lazy, and we couldn’t make sense of it. I mean, during our very first meeting with him and the real estate agent, the guy seemed incredibly eager, enthusiastic, and in a rush to sell.
But as it turned out, the reality was far more frustrating. Apparently, other foreign investors were planning to fly in to view the property. Driven by pure greed, the owner was intentionally dragging his feet on sending us the documents just to buy himself more time, hoping he would get a higher offer from someone else.
The Voice in My Gut
When did we find out the real story? Well, after nearly two weeks of waiting, they still couldn’t manage to send over a single page of documents. I felt it deep in my gut that something shady was going on. I turned to my spouse and said, "It’s better if we walk away from this place."
Remember what I said at the very beginning about listening to your instincts? This was exactly where that lesson kicked in for the first time. Even though my spouse wanted to wait just a little bit longer, that tiny seed of doubt had already taken root in my mind. And honestly, that gut feeling has never lied to me in my entire life—not about any situation, and not about any single person. That inner voice always speaks the truth, and it always shows up at the exact right moment.
Later that day, we sat quietly by the beach, having a drink. We barely spoke a word. It felt as though we were both silently giving up on our dream project, but neither of us had the courage to voice it out loud just yet. We had come here with such massive dreams; packing up and quitting this early simply wasn’t in our DNA.
Meanwhile, my phone wouldn’t stop buzzing. Every hour, a different agent or landlord texted or called. Most of them didn’t speak a word of English, so communication was a lost cause anyway.
Then a young local guy who had shown us a few plots earlier called us. He invited us over to the hotel where he worked just to have a chat and grab a coffee. We jumped on the scooter and drove to the address he sent. It turned out to be a beautifully built, boutique wellness retreat. It wasn’t right on the beachfront; it was tucked further inland. Seeing it made us quietly wonder if we should give up on the whole "oceanfront view" fantasy. But deep down, that wasn't what we wanted. If you fall in love with a dream and hit the road for it, it has to be exactly the way you imagined it—it has to feel 100% right in your soul.
As our coffees arrived and we started chatting, the local guy looked at us and asked, "So, have you guys managed to find anything yet?"
We gave him a brief recap of what was happening with the two-villa property. He looked at us blankly and blurted out, "Oh, I know that place. But did you guys actually know there is an active lawsuit against it?"
We could only say "No".
He went on to explain that a monkey on the property had attacked a previous guest and literally blinded them in one eye. Because of that horrific incident, the tourist had launched a massive legal battle against the establishment.
To this day, we still don’t know for sure if it was the absolute truth or a local rumor, but he didn’t stop there. He added, "On top of that, the owner has never paid his food and beverage suppliers on time. He owes a mountain of debt to local vendors. Keep that in mind."
At that exact moment, the voice in my gut started screaming, "I told you so!" My stomach literally turned, and a bizarre wave of nausea hit me. As my spouse and the local guy kept talking, their voices faded into the background. I could barely hear them anymore because a thousand questions started racing through my brain.
Were we making a massive mistake? What on earth were we doing here? What if we had blindly bought that place without knowing any of this? Was there a way to find out about these traps beforehand? Yes, maybe there was, but what was the secret path? And who could possibly guide us through it?
Standing right at the edge of those terrifying questions, I felt incredibly lonely and completely lost.
This exact feeling is the biggest reason why I decided to create a direct email line for you all. If you are standing on the brink of a similar international venture, or maybe you’ve already jumped in and found yourself trapped in the mud—feeling lost and having no idea who to trust or turn to—please feel free to reach out to me directly at bluelephant.advisor@gmail.com. For the next few months, I will be answering all your questions and offering guidance completely free of charge.
That is my genuine motivation for writing this diary: to provide a safe, zero-cost anchor for independent, everyday investors who feel just as isolated and overwhelmed as we did.
Sometimes, you walk right up to the absolute edge of a cliff just to admire the scenic view or take an innocent photograph. In a split second of distraction, your foot slips. You violently throw yourself backward just in time to avoid the fall. Your heart pounds like it’s about to burst out of your chest, and the terrifying thought flashes through your mind: "I could have just died."That split-second near-death experience, that movie-reel flash... that is exactly the kind of state of shock I was in as we said goodbye to that local guy and walked out of that hotel.
The Overheating Brain and a Wrong Button
By the time we got back to our rented village house, the tiny crumbs of motivation I had left were completely shattered. Ever since I was a kid, my brain has had this automatic defense mechanism where it constantly generates a backup plan—Plan B, Plan C, all the way to Plan E—for every single scenario.
Once again, my mind started working like a severely overheating computer, spitting out wild possibilities. Maybe we could move to a different country. Maybe we could crawl back to our old jobs. Or maybe we should just go back to our families. A mountain of exit strategies collided in my head. We had completely left our old lives, jobs, and careers behind. We had packed everything we owned into just three suitcases and left them in a friend’s storage unit back in our previous country.
Our original plan before coming here was so simple: find a plot within a few days, make the payment, sign the papers, and go on a nice holiday with our families. From there, we were supposed to head to South America—a backpacking trip we had dreamed about—to gather inspiration, design ideas, and maybe a few decor pieces to bring back for our hotel.
But after three weeks of aggressively rowing against the current, sitting on an old wooden chair in that village house, the terrifying thought crept in: Maybe this whole place was a terrible idea. It broke my heart just to think about it.
As the chaotic scenarios kept chasing each other inside my head, I looked at my spouse and said, "Maybe we should try another country. We could go to the Dominican Republic, or maybe find somewhere in South America that we fall in love with. Maybe we should try our luck there."
Like all desperate ideas, it sounded completely logical at first. My spouse agreed, "Yeah, why not? Maybe the oceanfront plot we’ve been dreaming of is waiting for us over there." Having a backup plan brought a brief wave of relief, but the toxic fear of “What if we fail there too?” kept eating at us.
While I was drowning in these thoughts, my phone was relentlessly ringing. Message after message from unknown numbers kept flashing on the screen. Frustrated, I sat there scooping a bowl of yogurt, aggressively declining every single incoming call.
Then, the phone started ringing yet again. As I reached out to reject it, my finger slipped and accidentally hit the green "Answer" button. A voice on the other end started shouting, "Hello? Hello?"
Panicking slightly, I brought the phone to my ear. I instantly noticed that this young man spoke much better English than most of the real estate agents we had encountered. "Hello, madam," he said, "I see you left a message looking for land. We had messaged and called you, but you didn’t reply”. Many agents over the last three weeks; it was mathematically impossible to figure out which one it was.
For a split second, I wanted to say, "Never mind, we’ve given up." We were too exhausted, and we had zero energy left to tour another property—especially after the horrific monkey lawsuit we had just uncovered. But my lips moved completely independent of my brain, and the word "Yes" slipped out.
The young guy repeated again, "I called you before, but you didn’t answer. Right now, my father, who is a senior real estate agent, is right next to me. He wants to speak with you. He has a few clean plots in his hands." He handed the phone over. Suddenly, a remarkably calm, warm, and highly fluent English-speaking voice came through. I guessed the man was somewhere in his late 50s or 60s.
“Hello, madam," he said gently. "I have a few plots available that perfectly match the criteria you specified in your message. Would you like to see them today?"
“Today?" It was already getting quite late, and I didn’t even know what region these plots were in. My immediate survival instinct was to brush him off. I planned to say, "It’s too late today, maybe tomorrow," and then block the number or never reply again. That was what my brain wanted. But my mouth completely rebelled against me.
Before I knew it, I was agreeing to meet him the very next morning. After hanging up, I looked at my spouse, defeated. "We’re going to look at a few plots with one last real estate agent tomorrow morning. After that, I think we can officially pack up and quit." Neither of us had an ounce of hope left for these upcoming viewings. My spouse rolled their eyes with a look that clearly said 'right’, but quietly sighed and said, "Okay."
Without discussing it any further, completely drained of all physical and emotional energy, we went to sleep, waiting to meet this mysterious old man the next morning.
A 200-Year-Old Smile on a Blue Elephant
When we woke up the next morning, it honestly felt as though we had been run over by a truck. For a brief second, we heavily considered canceling the meeting. But we had agreed to meet at exactly 8:00 AM, and we didn’t want to be disrespectful by backing out at the absolute last minute. So, reluctantly and with absolutely zero hope left, we hopped on the scooter and hit the road. It was a brutally hot, humid, and blindingly sunny morning.
As we were weaving through the streets, something massive and bright blue suddenly caught my eye. I frantically yelled at my spouse to stop the scooter, but the chaotic flow of traffic had already pushed us too far ahead. I insisted, almost stubbornly, that we had to turn back. We were going to be late for our appointment, but I absolutely had to see what that blue thing was.
Ever since I was young, I’ve had a deep, almost obsessive passion for interior design and aesthetics. After wrestling with the dangerous, wildly flowing local traffic, we managed to make a U-turn and pull up right in front of the place. We had driven past this exact spot dozens of times before, but I had somehow never noticed it. It was an antique shop. I absolutely adore antique stores; I could lose myself inside one for hours, examining every single object piece by piece.
In complete contrast to its gigantic, heavy blue body, it had the most mischievous, childlike smile carved onto its face. The intricate patterns and stunning details etched onto its head and body were so mesmerizing that I instantly fell completely in love with it. I stood there for minutes, completely under its spell, examining it.
It was heavily weathered and deformed. The plaster was peeling off in several places, some of the tiny, delicate mirrors on its neck collar had fallen off, and the vibrant blue paint had faded so much that it was starting to turn white beneath. Yet, despite all the wear and tear, it was still smiling.
While I was staring at it, completely enchanted, the owner of the antique shop walked outside. After greeting him, I immediately asked what this magnificent piece actually was, because I couldn’t quite grasp its purpose. It was a giant blue elephant standing on a massive wooden table, with another tray on the back, its legs rusted.
The shop owner smiled and said, "This elephant was just brought in. It’s far too large to fit inside the shop, so it’s sitting out here for now. It came directly from a sacred temple, and it is approximately 200 years old. It’s actually a bit famous; it has been rented out from time to time to appear in various documentaries."
Hearing its short history made me fall in love with it even more. It was 200 years old — ancient, heavily worn out — yet it was still standing strong — and still smiling through the chipped paint around its mouth. "How much is it?" I asked.
He named a price close to 3,000 Euros. I spun around to look at my spouse, who was already shaking his head in a clear 'don’t even think about it' gesture. I started pleading like a crazy person. "Please let’s buy it, please! My birthday is still a few months away, but I want this as my birthday present, please!"
My spouse burst out laughing. "You’ve got to be joking. What are we going to do with a giant elephant? Even if we buy it, we have absolutely nowhere to put it. We don’t even know if we are staying in this country yet—we haven’t even found a single clean plot of land!"
But I didn’t stop. I kept insisting without taking a breath, pleading for minutes. The shop owner just stood there with a warm grin, highly entertained by my childlike begging.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, my spouse gave in. "I promise you, if we find the exact plot we are looking for and actually buy it, we will come back and buy this elephant. Deal?"
My mood instantly crashed, and my face fell.
Defeated but bound by the deal, we climbed back onto the scooter. Yet, as we pulled away, the mysterious, knowing smile on that blue elephant’s face left me with a strange, sudden wave of newfound hope. We drove off into the heat, heading to meet the mysterious old real estate agent, completely unaware of what the universe was about to throw our way.
Say Hi! to him…
