My Best Friend Is Pregnant With My Husband’s Child

This story is inspired by Real-Life inspiration

Lara didn’t have a boyfriend.

That was the first problem.

When she told me she was pregnant, I was shocked, but I tried to be supportive. People make mistakes. Life happens. What bothered me wasn’t the pregnancy — it was the silence around the father.

Every time I asked, she changed the subject.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll handle it.”

But she wasn’t handling anything.

Her mother started asking questions. Neighbors whispered. The pressure became too heavy, and somehow, it all landed on me — the married best friend with a “perfect life.” The way they compare us does make me uncomfortable, but I can’t just keep my distance from her.

She started visiting me occasionally, and it became a habit. My husband is always asking about her. I do wish I could get pregnant quickly because he seems like a perfect future father with the way he asks for her and gives her attention when she visits. I really do not think much about that, cause c’mon, that’s my best friend since High school days, and the husband I just got married to recently.

One afternoon, Lara called me crying. “Please,” she said. “Come to my parents’ house with me. Help me explain to my mum.”

I agreed. That’s what best friends do.

Her mother didn’t even let her finish.

“You see your friend?” she said, pointing at me. “She’s married. She’s responsible. She knows how to keep a home. And look at you — pregnant with no husband, no explanation.”

I felt uncomfortable again, but I stayed quiet.

Lara kept crying. Her mother kept shouting. The room felt suffocating.

Then Lara snapped.

“Stop comparing me to her!” she yelled. “She’s not better than me.”

The room went silent.

Her mother scoffed. “Then who is the man that got you pregnant? Or should we assume you created the child yourself?”

Lara looked at me.

Not past me. Not through me.

At me.

“Your husband is the father.”

I laughed.

A sharp, ugly laugh escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

“Lara,” I said, shaking my head, “you could’ve mentioned anyone else. Anyone. Why my husband?”

Her mother stared at her in disbelief. I stood up, still laughing, still in denial.

“This isn’t funny,” I said. “You should’ve used someone else’s name.”

Lara didn’t argue.

She reached for her phone.

She dialed a number.

I watched, confused, annoyed — until the call connected.

“Darling,” a familiar voice said, warm and worried. “Is anything wrong with the baby?”

My knees went weak.

Lara put the phone on speaker.

She asked a few questions — about the pregnancy, about the doctor, about “our next steps.”

He answered easily. Comfortably.

Like this wasn’t the first time.

I took the phone from her hand.

“H-hello?” I said.

Silence.

Then my husband’s voice again. “…Why do you sound like that?”

I dropped the phone.

No explanation could undo what I had just heard.

No lie could save anyone.

Her mother screamed. Lara cried. I stood there, numb, watching my life rearrange itself in seconds.

The man I sleep beside every night had already built another future — inside my best friend.

They’ve both tried to talk to me since.

I haven’t listened.

Some betrayals don’t deserve conversation. They deserve distance.

I haven’t decided what to do yet.

But I know one thing for sure: The truth doesn’t always come quietly. Sometimes, it speaks on speakerphone.

What would you do in this case? Like seriously, I am confused. I’ve just gotten married, so I probably can’t file for divorce or take on a second wife at this moment. I am too young to be called the first wife, it sounds somewhat to me. I have been distressed for weeks now. I lost my best friend and also my husband.
