An AI Ethics 101
Have you read the first three insightful views from InnoEthics?
The beginning of a series of articles by Allegra Cuomo for the InnoEthics initiative. These first three cover key terms for the ethical AI debate, namely Sociopathic Intelligence, A-ethical AI, and Ethical Debt.
Sociopathic Intelligence
An artificial intelligence system that is singularly focused on achieving its objective, to the exclusion of all other considerations, including ethical consequences. The term ‘sociopathic’ is used metaphorically to highlight the AI’s lack of empathy and its willingness to disregard potential harmful consequences to others in pursuit of its goal.
A-ethical AI
An artificial intelligence system that operates without a moral or ethical framework. It is neither good not bad, but simply performs its functions based on its programming and data. When its actions clash with human values, it is not because the AI is “unethical” but because it lacks the capacity to understand those values.
Ethical Debt
Ethical debt refers to the accumulated cost of neglecting ethical considerations in the development of artificial intelligence systems. Modelled after the concept of ‘technical debt’, it represents the future expense and effort required to fix ethical problems that were ignored or overlooked during the initial stages of a project.
