Attending the five-day Rotary International Convention in Taipei, Taiwan, was an unforgettable journey of inspiration, connection, and a powerful reminder of the global impact we create together. This year’s theme, “Making Lasting Impact,” resonated through every general session, breakout discussion, and shared moment among the 38,000 global attendees.

Moving Beyond Numbers: Real Stories of Impact

During the sessions, RI President Francesco Arezzo and Rotary Foundation leaders shared the staggering global reach of our programs. Yet, as President Arezzo emphasized, the true weight of our mission lies not just in high-level metrics but in the human realities behind them.

He shared a deeply moving encounter from his recent visit to Pakistan to observe Rotary’s polio immunization efforts. He recalled seeing a three-year-old girl who had been paralyzed by the disease, using her hands to pull herself along the ground just to join a group of playing children.

“That little girl is why we cannot stop,” President Arezzo told the convention. “We must finish because the next child is still waiting.”

This practical reality reinforces why the synergy between seasoned Rotarians and the vibrant energy of Rotaract is so vital. It serves as a stark reminder that our vocational and humanitarian service bridges critical gaps, offering sustainable future opportunities for young people worldwide.

The Art of Storytelling and Malala’s Message on Education

A core takeaway from the presentations was the absolute necessity of storytelling. It is no longer enough to simply fund or execute good work; we must master the art of telling our stories. Relatable narratives are how we inspire the next generation, build local trust, and secure the collaborative resources needed to scale projects.

This call to use our voices was magnified by the keynote address from Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. Addressing the convention, Malala shared her profound journey of advocating for girls’ education — reminding the audience that even in the face of immense adversity and personal danger, the voice of a young person can spark a global movement. Her message perfectly aligned with Rotary’s mission: empowering young people is not a passive endeavor; it requires giving them the tools, the safety, and the platform to speak up and lead.

On the grand stage, this responsibility was beautifully framed by the screen visual:

“The person you became meets the person you could have become.”

The Charge Ahead: “Embracing the World with Open Arms”

Taking the stage to a thunderous standing ovation, incoming president Yinka Babalola delivered a visionary inaugural address, challenging the 38,000 attendees to rethink the essence of their membership. He emphasized that true impact cannot happen in a vacuum; it requires an internal transformation first.

Below is an extract from his inspiring address:

“As members of Rotary, we share a vision of a better future. To make this vision a reality, we must acknowledge and unleash the change within ourselves. Rotary cannot live on structure alone. Meetings happen, reports get written, and targets are discussed — but without a deep emotional connection, service becomes merely transactional. We must remain transformational.

Our theme for this year is to Create Lasting Impact. This means making our clubs more welcoming, embracing the world with open arms, and carrying out projects that genuinely transform communities. Let us ensure that our youth are not just passive recipients of our guidance but active partners in our decision-making. Leadership is about creating a momentum that outlasts our tenure.”

The convention drew to a powerful close as British singer Leona Lewis took to the stage, her soaring vocals bringing thousands of attendees to their feet. As we departed the venue, walking through a human corridor of hundreds of cheering Taiwanese Rotary volunteers, the message from Taipei was unmistakably clear: we return to our home districts not just to manage projects but to lead with emotion, intentionally cultivate our youth, and fiercely create lasting impact across the globe.
