Why Doesn’t My Dashboard Ever Just Tell Me What KPI Actually Drove Result?

Why is it that dashboards never just tell us which KPI Actually drove this week’s result? We open the dashboard and there they are — Charts, comparisons, percentages, color-coded alerts.

We scan, interpret, and debate…

Someone points at conversion. Someone else mentions traffic or other KPIs. Another says about product inventory timing played a role. And somehow, after 30 mins, we still don’t have a clear answer, and no one wants to be the person who says, “ So what exactly are we changing?” or “What exactly is a real issue here?”

Instead, we get conclusion that sounds familiar:

Let’s monitor it next week again.

I sometimes wonder if dashboards were designed more to support discussion than reporting. They show us everything. So we’re left to connect everything on our own… And maybe that’s the point.

But then why does it often feel like we’re hosting a weekly post-mortem instead of triggering a change?

Then numbers move, we react, and we reflect. Seven days later, the same conversation returns. That’s when it hit me.

So I started asking myself: What if the real issue isn’t that we don’t see the data… What if it’s nothing in the dashboard is structurally allowed to say,

This is the one that mattered. And this is what happens next

Maybe dashboards aren’t failing. Maybe they were never designed to guide you to decide your next action or clearly point at what truly drove the result. And I still wonder… If a KPI moves and nothing structurally changes… was it ever really giving us insights?
