The Gish Gallop: Why Adoptees Cannot Answer Every Platitude

Duane Gish was a creationist debater who developed a frustrating technique for winning arguments. He would flood his opponent with a rapid stream of weak arguments, half-truths, and misleading questions.

The opponent could not possibly refute every single point in the time allowed for the debate. The audience saw the opponent struggling and assumed they were losing the debate.

The technique works even when every individual argument stands as false. Volume beats accuracy in the moment. Speed beats depth in the moment.

The Gish gallop does not prove any single point, it simply exhausts the person trying to respond to the flood.

The Adoption Gallop

Adoption advocates gallop through a familiar list of talking points. “She chose life for her baby.” “He needed a stable home with two parents.” “Love makes a family.” “Biology doesn’t mean anything.” “The past belongs in the past.” “Be grateful for your rescue.” “You were meant to be with us.” “Those studies have flawed methods.” “My adopted child is perfectly fine.” “You just had a bad experience.” “All those unwanted babies need adoption.”

Each statement requires a separate response from the adoptee. The adoptee must explain why choice becomes complicated when poverty and coercion enter the picture. Why “needing a home” ignores family preservation systems that should exist. Why love does not erase early trauma. Why the past does not stay past even when records remain locked. Why gratitude feels different when it’s forced upon you, after your first family walked away.

The gallop leaves the adoptee breathless and defeated. By the time they answer the third point, the speaker has already moved to the seventh point. Or maybe even claimed victory and moved on to the next topic.

Why the Gallop Works So Well

The Gish gallop works because human attention has strict biological limits. A person can only hold so many ideas in working memory at once. The galloper fills the available mental space with noise and confusion. The listener cannot separate weak arguments from strong ones, and everything blurs together into a single mass.

The gallop also works because refutation takes longer than simple assertion. “Be grateful” takes one second to say aloud. Explaining why gratitude feels complicated for an adoptee takes thirty full seconds. The galloper uses that time to fire off three more rapid assertions.

The adoptee falls behind in the exchange. The audience sees an adoptee struggling to keep pace and assumes the adoptee lacks good answers. The galloper wins the day.

Weariness Beneath It

Every adoptee knows this experience from family dinners, holiday gatherings, and conversations with well-meaning friends. Platitudes arrive one after another, faster than the adoptee can form a response. The adoptee stops trying to answer. The platitudes stand unchallenged in the room, and the truth-teller feels deeply defeated.

That defeat is not a failure of knowledge or preparation. In fact, the adoptee has all the facts ready, but the interaction is a failure of basic human capacity. No single person can outrun a gallop alone without help.

A Proper Defense

The Gish gallop requires a willing partner to function properly. The galloper needs an audience that accepts the volume of arguments as evidence of correctness. The defense requires rejecting that frame entirely.

Do not answer each individual point as it arrives. Pick one single point and refuse to move until that point reaches resolution. “You said I should feel grateful. Let us stay on that point. What exactly should I feel grateful for in this situation?” A gallop cannot continue if the responder refuses to trot along.

The industry trains adoptees to play defense in every conversation. The only winning move stops the game entirely.

Refuse the gallop outright, and name it aloud. Gallop back with one single question that the galloper cannot answer quickly. “Why do sealed records need to exist if adoption stands as such a pure blessing?”

The galloper has no quick answer for that one question, so the gallop stops. The truth finally gets a word in edgewise.
